I've just been paid, and this is the last wage slip I will have until the end of September.

I'm trying to reassure myself that all will be fine but just the same, it seems a LONG eleven weeks ...

Make a budget so you are in control of it. Take any bills that are coming out & your food shops & deduct from the total so what you have left is disposable then split it up weekly or daily into what you can spend that week or day :)

I have a small independent income that covers all essential bills but leaves me with zero.

Then I have a zero hours contract job which is ad hoc and awful and I hate doing it but have no choice do I?

Yes but it's zero hours so I've no guarantee of work.

OP I think Rachel's referring a thread she started which has gone a bit wonky.

YANBU to be thinking ahead about your finances. If you can't secure any income in August, can you reduce your outgoings? Maybe reduce food shopping, run down the food cupboards/freezer. Are you in credit with the gas or electric? If you are, get a refund.

Do you live near a university? They often need temporary admin staff to prepare for the new term. They usually use a temping agency like Brook Street. It's worth giving them a ring and sending in your C.V.

A little more information is probably needed to be able to give you relevant advice. Do you have debts? Can you reduce any of your outgoings or maybe contact any companies you pay and see if they are willing to set up some sort of installment plan of affordable payments for the next two months.
You know when you are getting your next 'proper' wage so that makes it slightly easier to try to budget.

No debts and yes I knew but I was supposed to have two more weeks of being paid. Instead it all went in today which was surprising and bizarre as it means there's a longer timespan. I know it makes no real difference as it's the same amount of money but longer to budget.

I completely understand what you mean about it all coming at once. My DH has recently changed jobs and now gets paid monthly whereas he used to be paid fortnightly. He is actually earning more now but it took me a little while to adjust to having one payment a month rather than two.
It's good you have no debts. Is there any way of reducing any of your bills? Do you meal plan? I saved so much money when I started doing that. I also like to have a stockpile of tinned food and cheap things like pasta in the cupboard as back ups if things get really tight.
Suggestions from pp's of temp work is a good idea. Could you look in to that? Even places like Mcdonalds have a very quick turnaround time from hiring to first payday. That's fortnightly pay. Might not be ideal but can help get you by until September.

It's really difficult to meal plan as I don't have any cooking or storage facilities here. But I don't eat much anyway. It's more transport (needed for work) and stuff I have to pay on a regular basis. Thanks for understanding though!
