It is a beautiful city. Walk the walls if you can, it is a bit of a hike but worth it for the views, simply stunning. There are quite a lot of walking tours organised in the city and you can join them on the day.

There are day trips to outlying islands from the old harbour as well.

Its more expensive than the rest of Croatia though and eating out is quite pricey. Try to see the city early in the morning before the hoardes bus trippers arrive.

Dubrovnik is beautiful and if you stay away from the "main" street things are cheaper in the cafes and bars up the side streets.

Also they aren't in the Euro yet so make sure you take their currency (Kuna??)

Take a kayak or boat trip to some of the nearby islands - really lovely. And do the city walls walk early or late in the day as they get v hot!

We have been today . Having a heatwave at the mo so instead of upper 20's/low 30's, it was hitting 40 ish! Had lunch at Proto & it was so so good we are returning for supper tomorrow! Delicious food and really the nicest waiters. Some of those neoprene rubbery bottom beach shoes are a good idea if you are visiting the beach as its all rocky here.

Lokrum is a little island near to Dubrovnik and it's gorgeous, look at this, so pretty!

Also I really struggled with the heat (though my housemate's just been to Croatia and she said it was cooler than the 37 degrees we have here now) so if you're susceptible then budget for lots of stops and cold drinks.

The marble in the main street is very slippery- beware! Beautiful place less so when seen from flat on one's arse though

Agree with walking walls early - we were practically by ourselves as we did it as soon as they opened, and I noticed later on in the day it was much busier. Also you can walk up the mountain (Srd?) and get great views, which we tried to do on an evening but it got dark and I didn't really fancy wandering about at night, so might be another one to do early on a morning before the heat! Enjoy!

If you are doing either the cable car up to the top of the hill or the city wall do them around dusk/sunset on different evenings. It means virtually no queues for the cable car and it's much much cooler on the wall... Views were stunning and while not deserted we only had to wait for one cable car (vs a 400m densely packed queue - no joke!) you can also get a pre dinner aperitif up there

Also go eat at pantanrul it's absolutely delicious!

No up to date tips because it was my first foreign holiday in 1974 when it used to be called Yugoslavia.

It's now Croatia and was beautiful and they kept calling me Little English Miss. I'd love to go back.

We went on nightmarish hairpin coach trips to Montenegro and Mostar. I was travel-sick several times and didn't dare look out of the windows.

I remember some racist graffiti about Mostar even then. Inventively it was even carved into big aloe vera plants.

Mostar is a Muslim town. Yugoslavia was a fractured place then but we had no idea.

I keep telling DH we should go. Enjoy it.

I also remember the slippery marble in the main square.

I was 10 in 1974 and we were staying in a lovely hotel about a mile outside Dubrovnik town on a steep hillside.

It was called The Villa Dubrovnik and had a private shingle beach that you accessed via a lift that was labelled in French - I learned how to say La Plage on that holiday.

You stepped in on the ground floor and then descended two or three floors cut into the cliff.

There was a neighbouring hotel called The Hotel Argentina which had a salt water swimming pool that we could use because it was a sister hotel.

We walked down to the town almost every evening and peeked into Tito's summer house on the way. Beautiful. There were guards there but they let us gawp.

Mljet island is stunning too - the island has a lagoon in the middle which is the most stunning green/blue. You can easily get a boat trip there. Croatia is wonderful, I have been three times but not for 12 years now - very envious!

Definitely walk the walls - but there's no escape from the heat and the water on sale was expensive, so take lots! An amazing restaurant back in 2012 when we went was Nishta, off one of the parallel streets to the main drag. It's vegetarian but the food was fantastic and the service (we had 6mo ds with us) was brilliant. I'd probably book for evenings though.

The cable car was amazing and when up there walk away from the main bit and through some ruins to get amazing views over Dubrovnik.

limited, that hotel looks lovely. We are staying this year at a similarly quality hotel. It's amazing that parents allowed children back then to clear off with almost no money etc. We were 4 cousins (2 boys,2 girls) who did not sleep under a roof for a month. We just slept on trains, at stations, in parks and on beaches.

We are at Sun Gardens about 20 mins down the coast. Proto easy to just walk in for lunch. Supper booked fine with short notice.

grovel It was lovely in 1974 but not quite as lovely as it is now. It's been spa-ified. I'm going to renew my campaign to go back.

Best and cheapest cafe for coffee / cake / ice cream ... walk up main pedestrianised street, half way along on the right you'll see a steep little street with a small cafe on the left, outside of which is a white wall lantern with a pink ice cream cone on it. Sorry I've never known the name, but this is the place where all the tour guides go (and which they don't tell the tourist about!!)

Try it and you'll see why

There's a really good fish restaurant on the harbour called Lokanda Peskarija that doesn't huge platters of seafood for about £25. Well worth eating at.

You should also take a boat trip to the Elafiti Islands - there are dozens of tour operators around the harbour who can organise this for you. And Lokrum is a nice way of passing a morning or afternoon.

Get the bus/boat to Cavtat for the day.
Not much there to see sightseeing wise but there is a lovely harbour to sit and watch the world go by and some really nice restaurants.

Day trip to Montenegro, if you go you will need Euro's for there however.

In Dubrovnik, near to the entrance of the old city there is an ice cream stall that does the most amazing pistachio flavour.

I didn't find eating and drinking all that expensive, however I went with a female friend and we did a kitty so only needed spending money for 1 rather than 2+

A walk round the walls is a must, I didn't find it arduous at all and I'm a bit of a heifer.

YY to that ice cream place! IIRC, it's by a restaurant called Poklisar which is also nice.

I have to say I found Dubrovnik pretty cheap for food and drink but then again I live in London, which makes anything look cheap in comparison! I did notice that eating out on the islands was more expensive.

Nothing to add to the above, but agree with a visit to Cavtat (prounounced Savtat) as stayed there three times (there is a lovely little bakery near the seafront which does for an inexpensive lunch). I work in travel and have done for 25 years and have been lucky enough to see many, many places but without doubt Croatia is by far the most stunning place I have ever visited. If you can, when you check in at the airport, ask to sit in the row on the left hand side (as you look towards the front of the aircraft, so normally seats a,b,c as opposed to d,e,f), when getting closer to Croatia you will see the entire coastline and you fly right over the red roofs of Dubrovnik shortly before landing and see better from that side of the aircraft. It is truly a very special place. The Posip wine is nice too (white, our nickname for it was pissup).
