DS1(9) googling inappropriate images

I caught DS1 on the iPad this morning googling 'naked horse'

The images that came up were, as you would expect, a naked women and a horse. All quite White Snake video but still - not what I want him to see.

First he denied it, then he couldn't say why he'd googled that in particular.

How am I supposed to tackle this.

On the one hand, it's probably the same as us looking up rude words in the dictionary when we were 9 but the internet is a crazy scary place!

I have parental controls but not sure how these images got through or how they police it.

Or should I be more worried about his 'niche' interests!

Maybe he doesn't know how to spell 'whores'?

Not sure if that's reassuring or not...but at least it's a little less...niche?

I agree with skeppers. He was obviously looking for naked whites. Yes I would worry and there's no way he'd be allowed internet access for a while

'Naked horse' made me chuckle, sorry.

Maybe he's misheard some slang and was trying to find out what it means (straw clutching). At least it wasn't a horse wearing a sexy rug or anything.

Goodness it didn't even occur to me that he would know the word 'whores'. He was at a party on Saturday night with some friends. I wonder if it followed that.

Parental controls really aren't a substitute for supervision. Think of it like a life jacket, you wouldn't be without it, but you don't hoy your kid into the sea then leave them to it. It should complement your supervision, that's all.

Naked horse, oh bless his little heart. I'd just have a talk with him about his curiosity and explain that the Internet is not the place to find answers.

Normally they watch Minecraft videos and look up how to make paper airplanes.

I check the history regularly (it's my iPad, not his) and this is definitely a first offence. He was looking at it before we got up

Definitely restricted access from now on.

Yep, I think it's a spelling mistake, which doesn't make it better but at least makes it less niche I suppose.

I think this is going to be a rite of passage for all of us OP.
Up the supervision - both in terms of parental controls and actual supervision.
Talk about what he heard that made him want to google it.
Try and position yourself as the person he should ask about things, rather than the internet.

Good advice there from bestguest imo.

DS has a laptop (he's 11) but he is only allowed it when we are in the room and next to him. I have all his passwords too. Touching the laptop when we are not there results in laptop being taken off him permanently, and his xbox.

I'm pretty sure our parental controls wouldn't let him google anything with the word 'naked' in it. Maybe look at strengthening yours?

I watch a minecraft series on YouTube that is absolutely not suitable for kids, the gameplay is just minecraft but the commentary is 6 guys aged between 24 and 40 talking about whatever they want.
Does he use headphones? You might want to make sure he's watching stampy and not achievement hunter.

It's definitely Stampy but I have heard the odd few which have had some questionable language. Arrhggg, I'm not ready for this!

I think boys of this age do start talking about such things without having any idea what they are really talking about and before they can spell properly. At that age I caught my GS trying to google stripers! He was quite confused about why I suddenly started choking.

We did also have a more serious chat about it and why it wasn't a good idea.

I think I'd be discussing why he was inspired to look it up eg a dare, peer pressure, interest in what naked ladies look like etc. Then talk about the best way to deal with it in future whatever inspired him. And finally a lecture on the dangers of the internet. Although I supervise I've instilled the fact even an innocent word like 'kittens' could throw up Google hits like people being cruel or YouTube vids of the same, which will disturb her so it's not just me being a killjoy. So unless it's a specific phrase I've already given her permission for searching I do it and then either let her view the hits or click on appropriate links for her. I think if dd had been searching naked male whores I'd find something age appropriate like a book containing anatomical pictures of male form ( kids sex ed type) and discuss different formats eg art etc. and then tell her to look up the definition of whore and discuss the meaning if she wasn't clear. And then re-emphasise she can always ask me anything

I'm just trying to think where he would have heard the word. It must have been suggested to him by someone, I doubt it's even something that would come up in a song lyric.

I've checked my parental controls and you're right, they weren't high enough.

We're set for pornography but not nudity.

Have rectified.

Quite possibly overheard, anything from someone saying they hate pop videos 'full of half naked whores' or some other indirect way

Have you got a restrictions password set on the iPad itself too. This stops inappropriate images being viewed and disables the clear history option (unless you know the password)

Setting up restrictions so that the DC can't clear their browsing history is really effective.

I think the Apple parental controls are really good. I also use the BT parental controls on our home network which seems to work well.

All my DC are over 18 now but I still don't want any porn being viewed in the house - It's for my sake as much as anyone's as I don't want to accidentally stumble across any unpleasant images.

I think the biggest problem is internet enabled phones. Lots of parents seem clued up enough to have parental controls set up on their home networks but then don't take any precautions about what their DC can watch on their phones.

Yikes - you're right. BT Parental controls were on but made no difference. Ipad restrictions were set but website one not clicked. I've changed it.

I've googled it again and no images came up.
