AIBU?

To think, actually I will feed my son if he's hungry!

We had spent the day in London and just arrived back in Cambridge. DS had been as good as you can expect a one year old to be on the train, but after waiting 20 minutes for the bus (bloody Sunday service) he was tired and hungry. It was 5.30, his normal dinner time. Luckily, I had some blueberries and a couple of those mini baby biscuits left over from his lunch, so I thought, give him a snack so he's not crying all the way home and bothering everyone else on the bus!

Then I heard the woman behind me saying to her companion, "look at that, she's got all those treats, and every time he cries she's putting another one in his mouth! I never had to do that with mine! Terrible habit!" Etc, etc.

I took the higher ground and didn't say anything back, plus I don't want my son to think it's ok to have a go at people on the bus. But I was really upset...he's actually small for his age (just above 9th centile) - in fact, the doctor ordered some blood tests a few months ago because he had dropped centiles. He's steady now, but I'm always worrying whether he's eating enough. Ironically enough he really doesn't snack between mealtimes.

But she was a horrible, judgmental bully, no? And tbh - if she didn't feed her children when they were hungry, she's the bad parent, not me! I can't help but feel that if I hadn't fed him, someone (probably her) would have muttered the eternal, "ooh I think someone's hungry why don't you feed him?"

Feel good to have got that off my chest anyway!

You were probably right not to say anything to her her but some people really need to keep their thoughts inside their silly little heads.
Blueberries too! Can you imagine what she'd have done if you'd given him a Smartie?

Well done for ignoring her, she was just being a twat.

She was horrible. YANBU.

I've been known to sit there and shovel Milkybar Buttons into 15 month old DD's mouth if it shuts her up (and, by extension, shuts up any whiners) on public transport, blueberries and baby biscuits are tame Grin

I think 'horrible judgemental bully' is probably a bit strong, but yes it was unnessary.

Why people are so interested in a snapshot of what someone else's child eats is beyond me, though.

YADNBU! Of course you were right to give your DS a snack. He's a baby, it's not like he's acquired the skill of delayed gratification. Just as that woman has obviously not acquired the skill of not being a pass remarkable twunt.

Some folk just can't help themselves!

Don't let it upset you - she should have kept her trap shut.

The woman sounds like my SiL. Confused
Good for you ignoring her. She shouldn't have said anything.

Some people just have to comment- a woman announced to me with as much derision as she could muster 'There's more toys than babies in that pram' yesterday. I still can't work out if she just can't count (there was one 10Mo and one Freddie the firefly in the pram!) or what point she was actually making. I mean so what if there had been -gasp- two toys and one baby in the pram???

YANBU. We were in the park the other day after going to the bakery and the DC both asked for a piece of the bread we had bought. Cue rude old bat to her friend, 'Oh look at them poor little souls, all they got to eat is dry bread!' Must remember to stick some butter and jam in my handbag next time.

Stories like this make me glad to be partially deaf and generally oblivious to comments! YWNBU OP.

People are cocks. They will comment on the most incidental and ridiculous things. I am fortunate to have inherited my Great Aunt Selina's 'The Look' which actually kills over opinionated pricks stone dead upon deployment.

True story, don't test me.

Practice The Look. It's scathing, disgusted, and a little putting all at once.

Someone on a bus loudly felt sorry for my 2 yr old once because I was giving her raisins instead of sweets. Honestly you can't win. Ignore.

plant fair enough though, raisins are the devil's work.

Really, what did her age have to do with anything? Hmm

OP, you gave your DS healthy snacks because he was hungry, don't give this person's comments another thought.

Fastdaytears was it you on the bus?! This was before the satanic qualities of raisins were widely known so I don't feel too bad (plus all her teeth are different now).

Ignore her. Some people forget that they were born and not launched fully formed.

One thing I have learnt since having a child is for reasons I still don't really understand , People suddenly think they have a right to judge your parenting based on a snapshot they see.

Ignore... I can guarantee whatever you do someone will disagree.
