AIBU?

To ask everyone to eat less meat and meat products?

There are 3 reasons I eat a plant-exclusive diet:

  1. I feel I'm healthier (I became veggie to avoid BSE - and my osteoarthritis has been stopped in its tracks since I went vegan)
  2. Animal welfare issues (I went vegan after looking at the inevitable cruelty involved in the meat and dairy industries)
  3. Global warming/climate change (the single most important thing anyone can do to fight GW is to go vegan - the world's livestock industry contributes more to GW than does transport!)

Before global warming reared its ugly head, I was quite reticent about my veganism, only talking about it when I was asked. But now that our children's and our grandchildren's future is threatened, I'm a lot more vocal.

And now there's me and the Pope on the same side - who'dda thunk it?

Yabu. Just because that is the lifestyle you chose doesn't mean everyone else wants the same lifestyle

YABU. It's like a religion, isn't it?

You choose what you believe, don't try to convert everyone else.
You choose what to eat, don't try to convert everyone else.

I'm also vegan, but I don't think anyone else should be unless they want to.

I agree we should all consume less animal products.

YANBU.

I agree entirely with the three reasons you have given. And I have another reason: meat production is a very inefficient way of producing food. If less grain etc went in to rearing livestock for meat, there would be more available to feed people. (Yes, I know that there are other geographic and political reasons causing hunger too, but reducing the consumption of meat would be an important first step.)

I have been a reticent vegetarian for forty years. Sometimes I think we need to speak out more.

YANBU to ask. YWBVVVU if you got stroppy because people refuse.

Yanbu. All those points are very real and valid and I commend you for doing. I wish we all could be vegan but sadly it won't happen! People like meat too much and I do include myself in that category, but I am trying!

YANBU.

The responses on this thread so far are why this planet is sleepwalking into a point of no return. The greedy, consumerist and ignorant attitude seen here is depressing.

If everyone made a small change and just cut down on meat a little bit it would make a big difference. But people are too selfish. I really despair!

YABU. If we are all vegans, then we don't milk the animals; there will be a milky explosion within which will cause endless traffic and flooding worldwide. Besides, what would mumsnet have to judge if Greggs didn't sell sausage rolls? A couscous roll?

I don't much like meat actually and rarely eat it. I'd sooner lie down and die than face a life without cheese or butter.

I agree but threads like this are counter productive, all it does is make people defensive and aggressive.
