AIBU?

To have a little cry about ds leaving primary?

I'm sad tonight. My little boy is leaving primary school tomorrow. Today was the last time I'll take him to school or pick him up and I feel really emotional about it. He's such a good boy and I'm so proud of him. He's worked his socks off all the way through primary, has battled hard to overcome real shyness and has behaved impeccably at all times. But this is such an end of an era. Can't help feeling that from now on he won't need me as much! So infront of him I'm smiley, bouncy and bursting with pride, but when he goes to bed tonight, I'll be having a little cry. Sad Anyone else?

Not primary here but preschool, I was bubbling like a baby when they gave me all her artwork from the wall displays and the name tags from her tray and peg. I imagine it will be 100x worse when it's leaving primary school in a few years. Maybe I should buy shares in Kleenex.

My DD is leaving too...and she's similar to your DS but no, I won't be sad...I'm happy that the school experience has been such a positive one and now it's time to move on.x

I had a sense of that end of era feeling you're going through as several mothers were crying today! I wasn't expecting it so quite surprised but it seemed a sign of what a happy time those primary years had been. You won't be alone !

I'm glad my son is leaving primary school.
I've had it with that place!
For me, today was the final straw. Typical, predictable award ceremony...
My daughter is still there, she is only six.
Hopefully l will warm up then.
YANBU though. I think your reaction is more typical. Grin

Mine are teenagers now.

My youngest left her prep school a year ago and that school held such a special place in my heart. It was one bit of stability in all of our lives over a difficult few years. She thrived there.

I cried every day for a week when she finished. I have only just recently been able to look back on the photos of the Leavers assembly, Leavers lunch etc etc.

I am a person who resists change anyway. I found excepting the end of that era actually very difficult. I still get pangs now.

However, 1 year on she has settled well into a totally new school system and still makes me burst with pride at the lovely young lady she is growing into.

I was told on here to get a grip etc etc when I posted but I say these milestones affect us all differently. Cry if you need to but be positive about the future in front of your child.

My ds finished y6 today and I've been really surprised at how sad I've been feeling. I think it's mostly because he's been very happy there and he's so sad to leave his friends. I think it's a natural reaction to something ending. I've felt the same when I've changed jobs and left places I've loved.

YANBU... DS leaves primary tomorrow and it just seems like the end of a pretty big chapter in all our lives. I remember taking him to the Christmas Fayre there when he was 3, and explaining about it all while he was so wide eyed... now he is happily rambling up to the secondary school on his own on transition days.. I shall definitely shed a few tears.

He is ready to move on and I have no worries about him settling into a new school... just makes me sad to think how fast his childhood has flown

My DTs leave Primary tomorrow & I cried in the leavers concert, the goodbye church service (church school) & I know I will be a wreck tomorrow.

They are my youngest children & it is such an end of an era plus they are going to a different secondary school to most of their friends.

The children are all very emotional & most of them can't get through practising the song for the leavers assembly tomorrow without breaking down...oh god, I'm off again!!!!

YANBU DS is in reception and he will be moving to a different school. Today was his last day in school. I was crying like a baby, I'm going to miss all his classmates and teachers.

I was just like this last year but DS1 has had a fantastic year at secondary school and it's been lovely to watch him blossom.

It's made me think I'll be a lot more relaxed when DS2 leaves Primary.

My son left primary school today as well. I was crying before the leavers assembly even started. By the end of the day he, his friends and a few teachers were sobbing. It's that end of an era and having to watch them go off into the unknown - without you holding their hand. I just want to turn back the clock a few years...

I'm so glad I'm not alone. I am so proud of my lovely boy, but can't quite get my head round where my little chubby toddler has gone! I still have dd, 8, in primary, but feel sad that the two of them won't be in the same school anymore.
To everyone else in the same position, I hope tomorrow goes well, without too much emotion!!

Sorry, I did a little happy dance when my youngest finished primary school. No more:

  • School fetes worse than death
  • Easter sodding bonnets
  • Parents nights on dolls house furniture

    and so many other things

Mine leave next Wed. Sad.

They always have a cupcake in packed lunch box on Friday (only day they are allowed unhealthy stuff). I was welling up buying them today because it's the last cupcake I'll ever buy for Cupcake Friday.

Im going to be uncontrollable at the leavers assembly next week.

There were loads of Y6 parents having a good bawl in the playground at school pick up time while their DCs stood around looking mortified. You're definitely not the only one.

I guess yanbu, but try and keep it hidden from all these new year 7s.

My DS1 left primary last year, there wasn't a dry eye at their leavers assembly! I didn't think I would cry, but then they do the video/song montage of all their growing up photos and off I went!

Yanbu. My son is leaving primary today. I feel ok about it, time for him to move on yada yada. He, otoh, is VERY unhappy. He has to go to a school several miles away with precisely none of his friends, who have all got places in the two closer destination schools, either via lottery or sibling places. He is just deeply sad about it all and it gives me the slight rage that our secondary allocation system is so divisive.
