AIBU?

To put red bull in the base of the school's punch bowl at the summer fair?

I am NEVER getting roped into anything again! It's the summer fair shortly and I got collared by the PTA queen bee and I found myself agreeing to staff the beer tent. It's an all day job, and last year the tent was sweltering and full of wasps. Sad

This year she's decided that on top of the very specific requests for various spirits ("oh be a darling and ask Clare to bring a couple of bottles of gin") we need a fruit punch for the kids rather than fruit shoots etc, because punch is more healthy and less waste. She's got a point about the waste admittedly.

This thankless task has fallen to me. WIBU to throw in gallons of redbull and just see what happens?Hmm

I'm excited about this idea.

Well you would not be punishing her but innocent children and their parents but I think you do know that Grin my toddler managed to drink some of my mum's the other day when backs were turned Blush he was climbing the walls and he could have only had one-two mouthfuls Confused

Give her an excuse to get out of it?

(Is it really less waste, though? I would have thought any unused fruit shoots could be used at another event... whereas punch is going to have flies landing in it and kids with sticky hands dipping their cups in and spreading germs.)

Why do you need a bar at a summer fair? Can't people go without alcohol for a few hours...

Differentnaneforthis it's nothing to do with me what stalls they have. It's a big earner though and is always the most profitable. Why is it a problem???

why can't you ask for help? it doesn't have to be a one man job.

We did it in shifts so that people got a break. Just rope some friends in to help cover it.

and agree that warm punch with dead flies in it is less appealing than a fruit shoot

It'll have plenty of ice. I know this because there's an ice machine which blows out warm air. Lovely.

After seeing my son turn into a demon after a slush on Wednesday I dread to think what he'd be like after a can of red bull.

Don't do it. maybe save a couple of special glasses for queen bees dc

OH I didn't think it was up to you, I just think it is odd that a school fair should have a bar, because for some reason, people can't go an hour or so without a drink. It's just an odd concept to me. But then I have never been of the culture that needs a drink in my hand at every occasion.

I can see why it is a big earner though, it's just a bit sad, isn't it. It's a school fair, not a adults only disco!

I'm on our PTA and I think you should do it!

I deliberately put our helpers on stalls they specifically ask for, or easier to manage ones. As I want them to come again, and I only use people who volunteer.

I had my fingers burnt with a previous committee and was in a room on my own with three stalls! I took a step back for a while, as they took the piss!

very tempting - like going to a kid's party and yelling 'food fight!'.

but probably best left as a happy idea!

different I agree about the bar, and personally am not a fan, but we do it as its a good money maker, and draws people in, and I need a drink after the stress of organizing it!

I'd make some " special" brownies to go with it...( just for the teachers mind)

Right, so we're agreed on the redbull. What else can go in the punch? Can you think of anything blue? That always seems to send my kids do-lally

LittleMissIntrovert I bet it gets busy! I do understand the need to do something that raises plenty, as I am involved in fund-raising at our school. YOU have to do what you have to do.

This would never pass in our school though Grin

This year she's decided that on top of the very specific requests for various spirits

Presumably you've got a personal license for selling intoxicating liquor and the school or the PTA have got a temporary premises license as well?

Or is this the usual world of "rant on about illegal sales of alcohol, other than when the PTA does it, when licensing laws don't matter?"

Without outing myself, the demographic make up of our school is very much made up of cultures for whom alcohol plays a fundamental part.

I was going to say are you ALLOWED to have a bar? I'm 99% sure it's illegal to sell alcohol without a licence and I've never known a school have one.

I would also have thought fruit punch more wasteful. Most kids will look at it, see tonnes of fruit and whinge that there are no fruit shoots...

In all honesty I would just make up big jugs of cordial with ice in (maybe slices or orange etc if pta must be uber posh) and sell those. Do it with water (ice lemon and lime in the water) as well and diff sized cups and I bet you get a good uptake. I know I would buy drinks of cordial all round at a summer fair in the heat!
