Ooooh!

Is this a sneaky "Look at the size of my kitchen, we can leave the dishwasher open and still get in to cook" thread ? Grin

Not usually, but the other day DS got the giggles, tripped over the open door and into the dishwasher. Not great. Very unhappy dishwasher. The bloke came to fix it (amazingly he managed to fix the mechanism) and said he'd had a similar issue where a bloke had fallen in when drunk.

So, don't leave the door open. If you do, beware!

There's a serious side to this - I read a newspaper story where a child fell onto an open dishwasher and a sharp knife was sticking up out of the cutlery holder. Child was badly hurt.

Do you mean fully open, or just a bit at the top? I know people who leave it open a little bit to 'let the air in'. Not really sure if it needs air in, but that is perhaps another issue. Would drive me mad though, I would just be constantly closing it.

Similar story where the poor lady died here

I'm always nagging my mum to close the door as a result

Lalala...awful....I knew there was a reason why my dishwasher OCD was a good thing. Knives are always pointy end down.

I always leave mine a bit open, the manual said to lest a terrible fate befall us.
DH annoyingly stacks it, puts a tab in and leaves it Hmm he does empty it every morning though to redeem himself.
The DC have to be reminded daily to put stuff in it rather than leave dishes on The Side.

Yep my dh does this too, leaves the door right open so it's laid flat. It drives me insane

Another one with a kitchen too small to move in if the door is fully open. It's usually left ajar at the top.

Mine beeps if left open, even just a little bit.

Still doesn't get closed properly. Or emptied. And only seems to be put on when there is 1 bowls and a spoon in it.

ShelaghTurner · 08/07/2015 10:02

Why don't they switch it on? Seriously. This drives me INSANE. He will fill it up and because there's still room for a spoon he won't run it. And so we have no cups, plates, bowls all because he was waiting for more cutlery. FFS Angry

I definitely have absolutely no kitchen envy whatsoever of anyone with enough room to leave their dishwasher open even though my kitchen is so small that you practically have to stand in the dining room and reach in to the dishwasher to empty it, and I'm completely fine with that, honestly. Like pps, I am definitely more annoyed with OH who just chucks stuff in the sink or puts it on the side NEAR the dishwasher rather than IN the dishwasher and seems to think it will somehow switch itself on and subsequently figure out how to empty itself if left long enough. How the feck he managed in a flat on his own (which had a dishwasher) before I rescued met him, I have no idea. Oh yes, I remember now, he used to load it up, switch it on, take what he wanted out of it when it was done then put used stuff back in it WITHOUT EMPTYING IT FIRST and (eventually) put it back on again. By the time we moved in together some of it had been in there for months.

Yes it's a stupid and dangerous thing to do actually. I remember a case of a teenage boy dying after falling into an upturned knife in a dishwasher!

Now my dh drives me nuts as he insists on rearranging it and stacking from the back. He also puts it on the lowest hear setting and so things arnt cleaned.

Notso yy and the microwave as well. I bought a quiet boil kettle to try and counter the noise and the bastard things pings when it has finished.

My kitchen is very loud at times Sad

We leave it open as part of the system. If it's cracked open at the top, that means it's got some dirty dishes in but isn't yet full, and you should put your dirty plates in it. If it's shut, that means it's either washing right now or has clean plates in it, so you should put your dirty plate in the sink. Would never leave the door all the way open though, that seems dangerous!

IIRC a few years ago a young lad slipped and fell onto an open dish washer door with the bottom tray pulled out while it was being filled. An upturned carving knife in the cutlery basket did for him the poor fella. Dangerous things dish washers.

Shitting hell, I started another thread earlier asking what I had done to deserve a demonic dishwasher that was only killing my pans! Now It seems they're after all of us!!!
