I work on Sunday mornings and I stopped at the BP garage to get petrol, it is one of those big supermarkets/subway stations as well as petrol.

There was a woman and toddler and I couldn't believe what she was buying, bear in mind this was before 8 on a Sunday. 3 packets of haring, a big cinema style packet of crisps and chocolate and a 2 litre bottle of Pepsi.

Both mum and daughter were obese, the little girl was only 3 or so.

I just felt sad, that little girl should have been enjoying a healthy breakfast instead of being am dragged out. The mum obviously had an addiction.

I was at Tesco at 8am yesterday morning buying wine and snacks...with ds1 in tow.

He'd already had his breakfast and I was buying stuff for DH and I for the night. Then we were out for 10 hours with the kids at the beach and parks.

They'd probably had a muesli breakfast before going to kids club at the cinema...

You may well be correct in your judgement .....

But do bear in mind, I'd have thought it obvious for someone working in a petrol / convenience store, that shops are open 24 hours and we shoppers are not obliged to be buying only the stuff we're about to eat next.

Clearly couldn't be supplies for a party / BBQ later in the day that both mum & kid are up early for to prepare / drive to?

Actually, yes, it's sad that a three year old is obese, but unfortunately many are, and it's really none of your business - you've no idea how much, if any of the junk food the 3yro would consume.

On the other hand I see a couple of mums quite often (at the bus stop on my way to work) - one mum feeds her kids (about 7 and 5 years old ) chilli Doritos for breakfast. She's not overweight mind. The other mum is very overweight and was feeding her 4 year old a 'grab bag' of prawn cocktail walkers crisps, again at 8am. My judgy pants were hoiked up well and truly!

Well in the OPs defense, its pretty hard to see obese people eating crappy food like this - we all know that its a hard and viscous circle, but really, its horrible to let your child get obese and not do anything about it! Coke and crisps, not good!

Obviously there could be medical reasons why people are obese, but mostly (in my view and am ready for a flaming) its because we eat too much! I am overweight, and its no ones fault but mine, and i am doing something about it by joining slimming world (2 months now! and losing slowly)

You'd REALLY hate to see my Sunday shopping op. We usually have a film night, so its a family bag of crisps each, with dip. He has cider (I'm on my 9 months probation atm). Plus multipacks of sweets. I guess you wouldn't judge us as badly, cos we're not fatty fatty fatsos, but we do love 'pig out Sunday'.

What's haring by the way? If it's yummy, will have to add it to the pig out list.

YANBU. I am an obesity specialist and it breaks my heart seeing the number of obese kids out there. Yesterday I saw an obese mum and daughter (aged about 4). The obese kid was eating a huge bag of crisps as she walked along and the mum kept handing her a can of coke to swig. This is not an unusual sight. Waiving my judgey pants high and proud.

I wonder if this is only an issue because they were both obese? If they were both slim would the OP still "feel sad" about it?

Last week at the shop I bought a multi pack bag of crisps, some oven chips and 2 bags of Skittles. I wonder if the OP would "feel sad" about that if she saw me? Or would she even have noticed as I am not overweight and am quite small?

I would have probably felt sad at an obese child so young but as for what they bought, as others said it could have been for anything.

If she'd told the child to choose breakfast then force fed the above then it would have been a different matter!
