DH called the police on our neighbour's son last night, WHBU?

At around 2am this morning we were woken up by loud banging and shouting coming from next door's front garden. It was warm, so we had the bedroom (which faces our front garden) windows wide open, so we heard everything.

Neighbour's son had been locked out by neighbour. He's 19. Evidently he'd been out drinking, come home later than my neighbour had wanted so she was refusing to get up and let him in. He was kicking and punching the door, screaming through the letterbox things like "open the door you cunt!" and "if you don't let me in I'll fucking break it down" and threatening her that if she called the police (I think maybe my neighbour was talking to him through the door, but we couldn't hear) he'd smash the place up.

So DH went to the front door, opened it and told him to calm down. He swore at DH, shouted something nasty and DH came inside and called the police. Police arrived and we heard them speak to him, the neighbour's door open, and we think they went inside. We went back to sleep.

Did he do the right thing? We don't know if he was arrested. Neighbour was possibly trying to avoid the police and teach her son a lesson, or something. I suspect we may not be popular but we're not on the best terms with her anyway.

Would you have called the police or let the neighbour deal with it herself?

Yes he did do the right thing.
Good on him.
Hopefully the son will have a raging hangover and be made to come round and apologise.

I think it was perfectly reasonable.

I'd have called the police.

I deal with the results of such arrests several days a week - they get a conditional caution round here.

HWNU (he was not unreasonable) We would have done the same!

He did the right thing. I would have done the same. Our neighbours ocassionally have proper screaming scary fights in the street and I always call the police if actual bodily harm is being threatened! The despatcher always says they've had other calls about it too.

Yeah, better safe than sorry. He could have been trying to get in so he could batter someone. Not with the risk to do nothing, if you were worried.

Doubt they'll thank you for it though!

I'm guessing the neighbour's son was abusive and your husband felt threatened, hence calling the police. I'm impressed they came out so quickly! I think the son was being pretty abusive to his parents also.

Totally reasonable. And the neighbour's son needs to learn that there are consequences to his behaviour - a valuable lesson.

I don't think he was BU at all, your neighbour's son was clearly being aggressive towards his mother and anti-social towards the neighbours, and in that kind of state and temper he might have been physically violent had she let him in without the police being present. In the event she was trying to teach him a lesson, the police being involved might have done the job even more.

I would have done the same thing, definitely not BU in my opinion.

I hope he has a sore head this morning and feels very, very mortified about last night!

Sounds reasonable to me. I dont think he would have calmed down or resolved the situation witthout the police.

You did the right thing. Bet your neighbour was frigthen so hopefully the presence of the police sobered up her son and taught him a lesson. Fingers crossed he pops over later to apologies to your dh.

Absolutely the right think.

Yep perfectly reasonable to call the police. Hopefully the neighbours won't do it again now.

Ah good. Thanks.

No I really doubt she'll thank us for it. Our area is quite 'nice' (hence why she doesn't like us very much Wink) and she'll be mortified to have the police at her door. But then I suppose a drunk son making a racket is hardly any better.

We've called the police on the neighbour's son before now when a fight broke out in the street and we were quite frightened. Was on the verge of calling them again this week when loud music was being played late into the early hours, but fortunately a polite note sorted the problem out before that became necessary. There is no need for that kind of behaviour, and i hope the son learned a salutary lesson.

I would have done the same, the little shit needs to learn!

I doubt he was arrested, they'll have just had a word with him and his mother and left. But now he's seen that people won't tolerate his crap he might think twice about doing it again

Definitely a drunken son shouting abuse and insulting ndns is not got for keeping the tone of the neighbourhood up. You have done her a favour.

Definitely not BU to involve the law, had he not in a drunken state the lad may have tried to have a pop at him when hubby has come out which could have led to any number of unwarranted scenarios happening.

He would have been arrested in my city.

Cases like this under conditional caution have to attend an assessment session with criminal justice (us) and if alcohol is involved they are signposted to two further sessions with the alcohol awareness team.
Then that's the end of it unless they fail to attend or engage, in which case they're arrested and charged.

Why do you think he might have been unreasonable?
