I'm not going to link, but I am absolutely disgusted at the new Rihanna video. Extreme sexual violence. Especially coming from Rihanna who has been a victim of domestic violence herself. Who would make a video like this? I just dispair at what is becoming mainstream.

Sorry, rant over, but this just really upsets me.

Rihanna (and her publicist) will be rejoicing at this news.

Really? Are you saying we should ignore something vile, misogynistic and harmful to women, purely because if we give it attention then we are giving it publicity? This video will have publicity because people like to watch sexual violence as entertainment. Surely our role as feminists mean that we should take a stand against our children watching this.

Surely our role as feminists

"Our" role? Hmm

You do realise that not everyone here identifies as a feminist, right?

I'm a feminist. I'm aware that there are lots of posters who aren't though.

I liked one comment on the video which said that the video was trying to make you forget how rubbish the song was. Interesting how she is angry at the man but chooses to torture the woman. Ugh.

Very sad. I'm pleased my DD is now 14 and has no truck with "artists" like Rihanna who glamorise violence in this way.

It's a shame - she is one of the best vocal talents of her generation. I just think ... why?

I haven't seen the video but like most people reading this thread who also haven't seen it, I'm now going to Google it so you might as well have just provided a link really.

And what Toads said. Why are you assuming everyone is a feminist?

Cheeseandhamtoast · 03/07/2015 00:02

Ok I get the message. I'll leave the thread and re post in the feminist section.

That actually seems like a good idea.

Why are you assuming everyone is a feminist?

I actually do assume every woman is a feminist and I try to assume that all men are. Just as I start with the point of view that people aren't homophobic or racist - and then adapt as necessary when life disappoints me.

Report
WorraLiberty · 03/07/2015 00:11

Well you probably shouldn't Canyou

Just like I would never assume that everyone votes Tory/Labour/Lib Dem, or that everyone is a Christian/Muslim/Jew for example.

Everyone is an individual and generally people don't like assumptions being made about them, by complete strangers.

I'm not a Rihanna fan, but just watched the video, It's nothing worse than what the likes of Quentin Tarantino puts his his films. And I love Quentin.

Can't abide by Rihanna's music, but I would say similar content has been mainstream in feature length films for years... so why not in a music video.

Why do people always relate this kind of thing to their children? Not all pop music is for kids. I don't think Rihanna puts anyone under any illusion that she is child-friendly.

Worra, assuming someone is a feminist is on par with assuming someone is not racist or not homophobic or not anti-semetic in my view. it is the norm in my world to think that men and women deserve the same opportunities.

What people vote or what religion they are is entirely different.

We make assumptions about people all the time in real life - like we assume they aren't bigots until they prove otherwise or assume they are honest until proved otherwise.

But maybe you are right. Maybe I should assume that some women believe that women do NOT deserve equal opportunities in society. How sad.

You can't really compare this crap to Quentin Tarantino's movies.

There is no story line here, it's just a pissing contest to see who can be the most edgy.

Embarrassing to watch. (Not the video, the pissing contest)

Basically:

Rihannas goes to her cheating accountant's fabulous residence, and stuffs the accountant's wife (gratuitously shown with see-through bra and big tits) into a flight case.

She and her two bandmates, then torture the wife, hang her up from the ceiling, drag her out into the desert (all topless, natch), before eventually deciding that actually the wife is not so bad, and they should all go for the accountant instead. So all four of them go back to his house, and tie him up and murder him.

The video ends with Rihanna completely nude, covered in the blood of the murdered accountant, and with $100 bills strewn over herself.

So just another shitty piece of blaxploitation.

I think if you're not a feminist it's pretty easy to exclude yourself from the conversation.
