AIBU?

To take little children to Turkey?

So we're off to Turkey? Sensible after Tunisia? Majorca is looking more appealing now. Perhaps I'm just over-reacting.

Got a great hotel booked and would lose quite a bit of money. But that's just one of those things perhaps?

Anyone else going? Are you bothered or am IBU?

I wouldn't to be fair

It wouldn't bother me at all.

I personally wouldn't. Sorry.

I'm going with older DC in a couple of weeks. I'm not really worried, we're on the coast but will keep an eye on FO site.

I wouldnt.

I last went to Turkey in 2013 and a few months before there was a terrorist attack in one of the cities (not Istanbul or ankara). There was a high risk of terrorism and we were 1,100 km from the syrian border where there was a bomb or shooting. I was a bit panicky before but being there was actually pure bliss and one of the best holidays of my life.

In 2010, Mamaris there was an attack specifically targeting british tourists.

Ive been to Turkey 4 times, i love it: the atmosphere, the history, the hills, the sea but i wouldnt go back for a while.

That said, terrorist attacks could be anywhere and any time, so hard to know.

My next holiday will be portugal or Italy or croatia or cornwall.

I think I'd still take the DC to Turkey - so long as it was the coastal bit (well away from Syria). I wouldn't go to North Africa though (Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco).

That said, we're actually booked to go to Spain this summer, and then Portugal in October.

ffs go or don't go.

Make your own mind up, I think you already have.

Just don't base your decision on the views of a bunch of nameless respondents on a MN.

We know nothing, despite the claims we make on this site.

(I lived in Istandul for 6 years, I would say go)

How little are your littlies? Would there be an adult per child? If you were, God forbid, on a beach and attacked could you carry and run away? I know I'm not fit enough and so in my head I have ruled it out. I know it's pessimistic, I know it's giving into terrorism, but it feels like a risk too far for me at the moment. I would t relax and enjoy the break, which would defeat the object.

Sorry for the second post, I was thinking about it some more!

I would be far more worried going to France on holiday, they have been a target twice now !! Turkey has had a high risk threat of terrorism for at least 8 years so nothing has changed there. They have the biggest Military in Europe and security is tighter than ever. Most of the scaremongering is based on the resorts 'closeness ' to the Syrian border ( which is 100's of miles away ) and the fact it's a Muslim country. This beautiful country relies on tourism, don't tar it with a bad name undeservedly

Stopandlook · 28/06/2015 20:33

I wouldn't. Not because an attack is any more likely than any other target (i.e. pretty much anywhere) but because I just couldn't stomach it after what has happened.

I think that terrorists can strike anywhere and that London is as likely a target as Turkey.

But I'm going to Devon so I guess its easy for me to say Hmm

There was an article in the paper today saying which areas were deemed high risk and Spain is as high risk as Turkey mainly due to the Spanish government raising their terror threat to severe.

The safest places and least likely of a terrorist attack were Croatia, Bulgaria and Portugal. Morocco surprisingly was only an amber.

Id go to Turkey but not North Africa. The Turkish government and military are very strong. I wouldnt go to the southeast near Syria. But that said we're off to Israel next week with our young children

You are no more at risk going to Turkey now than when you booked it. It's always had a border with Syria and an awful record on human rights - I'm sure you'll be safely tucked up in a resort which could be anywhere for all you see of what's really going on and I'm sure security will be tighter than ever. Terrorists can strike anywhere - even in Britain so you might not be safe even if you stay at home.

As I said in the other thread the UK is classed as severe risk of terrorist thread but we are all getting on with life . If you want to go to turkey go
I am going next month and was probably more edgy about being in London this weekend

We've just returned from Turkey and I spent the whole week there worrying, and it didn't feel as relaxed to me as it usually is, and didn't feel safe leaving the resort. Then we get back and see what's happened in Tunisia and we will definitely be leaving it a few years now if the new craze with terrorists is to attack westerners abroad.

frenchfancy · 28/06/2015 22:10

I'm wondering the same thing. We are booked to go in October. Flights and hotel all fully paid. I guess we will see nearer the time.

Report

Just returned from Turkey and it's fine. We were hundreds of miles from the Syrian border. It's a massive country and you're more likely to be involved in a car crash than be a victim of terror.
