AIBU?

To think this was slightly insensitive?

Ok, ok, I probably Abu.

I was riding on my motorbike down a single track country lane, been down this road many many times. It was raining pretty hard and my visibility wasn't great so I was going fairly slow, maybe 20/25 mph.

Car approaches so I pull over to the left to try and pass it and apply the brakes in case I need to stop and allow it to pass. Unfortunately because it was raining and its a country road there was mud and gravel on the road and the bike slid out from under me. No one's fault, just an accident.

Person in car waits in the road while I (slowly) pick the bike up and get it out of the road. I then gesture that it was ok for her to pass me and she stuck her head out of the window and said she would have helped but she is disabled and couldn't. Fair enough. As she was moving off she said 'oh well, at least you didn't hit my car!' in a jokey way.

Aibu to think that this was maybe not the most sensitive thing to say to someone who has just crashed in front of you?

She's probably a bit socially awkward like me and was slightly shocked. It's not every day you see someone come off their bike.

Hope you're ok. Thanks

She was probably a little surprised and taken aback ( unless you do this frequently and she's frequently driving along).
So I wouldn't dwell on it.

And it as she said - you could of hit her car and really injured yourself. So it was lucky wasn't it?

She was probably making light of it in case you were embarrassed

Maybe you are over-thinking this. She had established that you ok (ish) by waiting for you to get up. Maybe she didn't know how to end this awkward interaction, and it was just an ill-considered remark, but not terrible, surely?!

It wasn't a tactful thing to say, but I'll bet she was kicking herself within seconds. It's the sort of dumb thing I have said when trying to be cheerful and friendly in the face of a near miss accident/embarrassing incident.

I would agree with her being shocked and trying to make light of the situation.

You gestured that you were ok. She obviously assumed you were ok and made light of it thinking you might have been bit embarrassed. I would say she misjudged the situation

Bit of a faux pas under the circs, but meant as a friendly joke i recon.

I think maybe she meant at least your body didn't hit her car. ie: that would have meant you were more likely to have been injured.

Well it was and it wasn't - it would have been worse for you too if you had hit the car. Maybe that was what she meant and it just came out wrong.

Insensitive of her, yes. Some people just don't have much empathy.

Are you OK, and is your bike OK?

I dropped mine once, stupidly when putting it on the stand Blush, a car just drove straight past without even stopping as I struggled to pick 200kg of bike back up again.....

Don't worry though, someone once said to me, there's two types of riders, those who've dropped a bike and those who will drop a bike at some point. It happens to most of us at some time.

Yeah, I did think that she probably meant it that way, I guess it was just the jokey tone she said it in. 'Thank god you didn't hit the car and you're ok' and 'ha, at least you didn't hit my car!' come across quite differently when you are shaken and in shock????

But yeah she probably just panicked a bit. And it would have been worse if I had hit her.

Fortunately me and the bike are fine, my armoured trousers did their job as I hit the ground with my knee pretty hard but we will live to ride another day, just need to watch out for slippery mud Hmm

Oops, meant Confused . Actually the bike was almost miraculously unscathed, got away with only 2 very minor scratched to the brake level and the handlebar on the side that hit the ground - I was more worried about the bike than myself and quite surprised at just how easily I managed to pick it up but I guess that adrenaline for you!

That sounds like something I would say Blush 'Socially awkward' is a valid observation and I would add 'black humour' to that. I often put my foot in my mouth and then CRINGE for hours afterwards when I realise the possible impact of what I've said. I never mean any harm and just can be a bit of a doof.

I also really, really, love my car.

I hope you're okay Thanks

I imagine she was probably trying to make a joke out the situation so you maybe didn't feel embarrassed or just to make light of it. She might well have been shaken up too after seeing that.
