To not want to lug stock about in a shop when I'm a customer?

Just been to our local fabric shop...it's quite big and I often go there. I was buying a metre of fabric from7 different bolts...so I took the bolts over to the cutting table and waited my turn.

The assistant cut the first bolt, passed it back to me and said "Can you just pop them back on the shelf as I go?"

Well...not really no....I've currently got quite a bad limp due to a sprain.

I'd carried them over, there was no queue or anything...nobody behind me...I didn't want to trot back and forth with the bolts as the shop's large...I'd struggled to carry them all in the first place. I've never been asked this before in that shop and I go there often.

So I said "Well I'd rather not, I've got a bad ankle and I'm in a hurry"

I just wanted to wait, take my fabric and pay quickly.

She then rolled her eyes and said in a grumpy voice "It's fine!" I felt bad but was I rude? I made a few polite comments about the fabric etc as she cut them but she point blank ignored me....very rude.

As I said, there was no queue and she was a young woman...younger and fitter than me! WIBU?

I wouldn't have carried the bolts to her... our 'Man of Material Mystery' stacks his fabric high and deep and doesn't allow it.

But she was VU to ask / expect you to comply!

It's normal in this shop to bring your own bolt unless you're short/weak but I just wasn't sure if I was Bu.

It is the name of the big rolls of material you see in shops that sell materials.

Not unreasonable if you are already injured and she is young and fit but my mum seriously damaged her shoulder and had to give up work early from lugging around fabric in the shop she worked at, so if you are able to help as the customer who first have to do it every day, it's nice. The assistant wasn't unreasonable to ask, you weren't unreasonable to refuse. She shouldn't have been grumpy about it but it's quite possible she was sore/injured too - these shops seem to be able to avoid complying with any kind of manual handling regulations!

Boleh hmm. Maybe they need to sort a better system out then? Some way of cutting without removing the bolt from the shelf...perhaps something like a loo roll holder?

She simply asked if you would put them back. She didn't ask you to rearrange all the stock and re fill the shelves from the warehouse. Given you'd already carried them once, she had no reason to know you were injured.

If I was able to do so, I would have put them back if asked.

What if you hurt yourself carrying the bolts, bet their insurance wouldn't cover it, plus you haven't had manual handling training so could well put Your back out carrying the roll, who would pay if you hurt yourself and couldn't work for a month. They'd be in a world of shit.

I suspect like Wintersmith that strictly speaking you shouldn't be carrying them at all. Unless you are purchasing the entire bolt, you're actually handling something that the store owns ?

Not sure where the elf and safety would stand on this, but in any case it was okay that she asked you to do it, but really unecessary to be arsey about you declining.

OP, you being injured is irrelevant; you shouldn't have been asked. If she is unable to put them back where they belong, as Boleh's mum was, it is up to her manager to arrange for someone else to do it. In addition, her rudeness is unacceptable. OP, you say you often go there; do you often have to deal with her? I think I would have mentioned this incident to he manager.

I often offer to put clothes I gave tried on back. I can't think of any occasion when the offer has been accepted. I have never been asked to put an item back. What happened to service?

Flossy I always put clothing back...and other things...in the right place. But these were massive and I'd already brought them. It's the norm in this shop to get the bolt down and bring it over. If I asked one of them would get it...but nobody does ask unless they're elderly or short!

Maybe it's the norm in that shop but it wouldn't be if I was a customer there, I would honestly go to the counter and aske for help and point out what I wanted. And I wouldn't expect to put the bolts back. And I wouldn't expect the cold shoulder. I know they are heavy but it surely goes with the territory of working in this shop?
I need to go now, I am working on my fabric perforating machine.

Hah! just re read your message, I am very very short. Even if I were not I still think they should serve you. When I am in places like B and Q and I need heavy stuff I wouldn't expect to struggle with it and I would be a bit shocked if they asked me to put stuff back myself. As I said, I think it comes down to service.
