Was out to lunch with dh and pil had been there a while ate and paid bill, went back to table to go. Just as we are about to leave one of pils friends comes out from inside (we didnt know she was there, and she had just started working there it transpired) with a plate of food for her lunch.

She came over saying hi, and promptly sat down at our table and said oh il sit with you. (It was obvious we were leaving). She then spoke for 2 mins to pil, ignored us, and then phoned someone on her phone just sitting there speaking and eating. It was really awkward as we were going to leave and then she was on her phone?!

Aibu or is this strange

Sounds normal to me. If she'd sat at a different people some posters would have accused her of being unfriendly and ignoring you. If she's pil's friends then it's natural for her to say hello to them.

If you were all about to leave all everyone needed to do was have a short chat, say that you were off and say bye to her. It would be obvious from the empty plates that you were going anyway and weren't being rude.

bit of a non-issue really.

I know its normal to come over and say hi...but she literally said hi then sat chatting on her phone, so we couldn't have said bye, so was a weird situation. Obviously no 'an issue' but just wondering if it was normal behaviour...i wouldnt do it!

Maybe she could see you were going, thought she'd say hi to a friend and then have an empty table to sit at. If she was on the phone you could have just got up and mouthed a goodbye or waved bye.

I would have just given her a wave goodbye and left. Don't see what the issue is.
