Fence and Neighbours

We moved into our house a few months ago and one of the things we wanted to change was the fence panels. It's a new build property but the some of the fences are rubbish, very thin and badly made. Our boundary fence (marked on deeds) had a horrible 3/4 fence with a trellis at the top. Whilst we get on with our neighbours, it started getting awkward with the trellis reducing privacy for both of us.

So we decided to replace the fence on that side, we spoke to the neighbours and they were fine with it. Considering we were paying for it and they would benefit from a) a much better quality fence and b) extra privacy I wasn't surprised they didn't object.

Anyway, we put up the fence and went around to check they were happy. They were apart from one thing, we didn't replace one fence panel nearest the house as it was already full height. They are claiming it looks "odd".

Am I being unreasonable in thinking they are expecting a bit too much? We specifically said we wanted to replace the shorter fence and it cost us a fair amount of money to replace what we did.

The fact that one fence panel is different on that side of our garden doesn't bother us, I don't think it looks particularly odd and I don't really want to spend another £40 on one panel that doesn't really need replacing.

Am I being unreasonable?

Nope, it's your fence, they don't get to dictate. The panel obviously didn't match before as it doesn't have the trellis bit.

Tell them that you're broke but if it's bothering them tgat much they should feel to pay for it. Wink

Ffs. *feel free to pay for it.
(In my defence I'm typing one handed in the dark whilst putting DC to sleep.)

Your fence, do whatever you like. It it's nothing to do with them. "Sorry you are unhappy but this is how we are keeping it".

I have had extensive battles over fences and i know all the legalities over boundary issues as I did much research. It is tiresome, and depends whether you want an easy life (but one where your neighbours think they have an rght to tell you what to do) or potentially an ongoing neighbour situation.

Personally, I sayleave it. You are totally in the right. Yur fence, your choices. You were good to consult them in the first place!
