AIBU?

To overthink the meaning of this..?

If your OH says to you:

"You're the most beautiful girl in the world to me"

Would you take this to mean:
A) you're not the most beautiful girl in the world, so don't get ideas above your station.
Or
B) you're the most beautiful girl in the world.

Aibu? How does your OH tell you you're beautiful? X

B seems like a normal way of doing it and something my dh says. Plus its true because beauty is subjective. You are the most beautiful girl to your oh what the hell would it matter what anyone else thinks anyway? I'm sure lots of people have partners who never say this stuff at all.

HellBoundNothingFound · 20/06/2015 11:30

I'd think B

My DH is always telling me I'm the most beautiful woman he's seen...can be a bit grating if you're in a mood but I'd be very sad if he ever stop saying it Grin

Don't over think it!

So your dh complimented you and you are trying to find a way to turn it into an insult?

Can I assume there is a back story?

C) i'm very happy and loved up to have someone I find so attractive. (But yes I would hear a slight hint of beauty being subjective but not be insulted by it)

My ex would say that (once upon a time!) but he would say "you are the most beautiful girl in the world" LONG PAUSE "to me"

Last two words didn't need to be said. He was obviously stating his own opinion but the "to me" just takes the shine off.

My husband says "you're truly gorgeous" which is much nicer. Grin

Thanks for your opinions. Maybe I am overthinking. But the last two words don't really need to be said do they? At the same time everyone appreciates that beauty is subjective but, from my oh I don't need to be reminded ? This sounds totally random but he was a frequent porn watcher before he met me, and bit of a "lad" and I suppose the beautiful to me thing makes me think that I'm obviously not as beautiful as the porn girls (the most beautiful girls in the world) but I am to him so as to no overly flatter me/remind me that I'm not actually that beautiful! Agh!
Wish I wasn't the thinking type

Blimey

You're really over thinking this.

It means what it says on the tin. You are the most beautiful girl in the world to him....in other words in his opinion.

Definitively overthinking it. Beauty is subjective; for some men it is Angelina Jolie, for others it is Page-3-Bimbo-of-the-day.

Look at it another way, if he said you were definitively TMBGITW would you accept it or think he was BS-ing you and perhaps wonder what he was after?

Report
KDS0401 · 20/06/2015 12:21

Err... men don't think "Wow! She's beautiful!" when they watch porn, and most most wouldn't want such girls as their OH/DP etc

Americans often say Brits can't accept compliments.

Report
CrystalHaze · 20/06/2015 12:40

Well, obviously you are not the most beautiful girl in the world to millions of other men, what with definitions of beauty being highly subjective, and it's completely possible (and no insult) that you are not the most beautiful girl in the world to any man other than him (and maybe your dad/DS, if applicable), so what he says is correct.

You're definitely overthinking it. Are you insecure about your looks/relationship in general?

RavioliOnToast · 20/06/2015 13:16

my dh has never said that, I must be an ugly fucker Grin

Report
RainbowFlutterby · 20/06/2015 13:19

I take it exactly how it's said. I don't really care what anyone else thinks about my looks so I wouldn't see the "to me" as an insult.

  • nor has mine. And if he did I'd go check if he'd been at the gin. I think it's a meaningless compliment anyway - it's lazy and superficial and pointless - just verbal buttering up. Is it the kind of thing you NEED to hear OP?

I'd prefer the 'to me' part to be added, because without it the whole sentence would be nothing short of bullshit

I'd say yabu and over thinking I'm afraid...I had my eyebrows done this morning and dh picked me up. I was waffling on in the car about how the technician was a perfectionist and he replied with 'and rightly so because you're perfect to me'.
He is a slavery little bugger though to be fair Grin

Ravioli, my Dh has never said anything like this to me either.

I think he was just being nice and paying you a compliment. He sounds one of the good guys!

C) you're the most beautiful girl in the world to me but bloody hell you're hard work

See, if a man says to me ''you are the most beautiful girl in the world'', i think ... well, i'm not - he's stringing an overused chat up line.

However if he says '' y a t m b g i t w ... to me'', then i would take that as a loving compliment.

To me my DH IS the most handsom man in the world. That's how i'd take the compliment. It's a subtle thing.

Gruntfuttock · 20/06/2015 13:52

MY husband has never paid me a compliment of any kind, so quibbling about whether yours meant A or B seems to be overthinking it, in my admittedly subjective opinion. Just smile and say 'Thank you' and maybe say something nice to him instead of not being happy with what he said to you.

I would bet money that if he had said 'you are the most beautiful woman in the world' and stopped there, you would have thought he was talking bollocks. Unless you do actually think you are

Good god woman! My husband says this stuff to me every single day more or less. He's always saying I'm the most beautiful woman in the world. Of course it's a crock of shit but he's being funny / sweet / loving. Would you rather he called you an ugly old hag ?!

I would take it as "obvious objectively you are not the most beautiful girl in the world because we both realise you'd be getting a lot more modelling contracts if you were, but to me, subjectively, you are the most beautiful because I don't find anyone else more attractive."

Report
aintgonnabenorematch · 20/06/2015 15:29

Oh good lord. Do you think you're the most beautiful girl in the world?. If you think that is possible then fair enough.

But you're possibly not?. So it's entirely possible he's paying you a huge compliment that you're most beautiful TO HIM?. I'd think that was lovely if it was me.

Report
ThumbWitchesAbroad · 20/06/2015 15:31

Neither a nor b - I'd think I was the most beautiful girl in the world to him but not necessarily to other people. But they don't matter, only he does, so it's nice.
