daughter is on 0 contract hours. shes still as work now. she normally there till 8pm its just got 9 and shes still there. i said i hope they are paying you. she said no only till 8.

she said because its 0% contract...i said it dont work like that if you work till 9 they pay you till 9.

she said we dont unforunately...i said its against the law.

she then said she would be in trouble if she complained about it.

this is her 2nd week in the job. if i say anything to her she gets stroppy. do i just leave her to it?

How old is your daughter? But yes, I'd leave it to her. Anyway she might have misunderstood if she's only just started.

How much is she getting paid? If the last hour is free then it should work out at least the mim wage for the other hours. Sounds like they are taking advantage but if they are not really breaking the law they can get away with it, if people will put up with it.

why would she work for a free hour? did not know there was such a thing. she gets paid 4.20 an hour

zero hours contracts are awful, but my understanding of them is they only have to pay you for the hours you actually work, so I cant see that she would NOT be paid for doing till 9 at short notice instead of till 8??

I'm not saying it's a thing to work for free. I meant it's illegal for her not to be paid the mim wage for each and every hour. If however she is getting this and her boss says you work for 10h I'm only paying you for 9 and she agrees , that is not illegal just really skint Flint behaviour. She's free to leave but it's not ilegal

From what you say she is on mim wage for her age then the boss is breaking the law. She can ask for more pay or report him

I'm no expert but if she's working for an extra hour on what I assume is age related nmw, can this not be reported anonymously as it brings the wage below nmw?

The minimum wage for her age is £3.79 ph. It goes up when she reaches 18.

My 17yo has had 2 zero hours jobs. She had a contract for both and always got paid for exactly the amount of hours she worked.

Also she has never been paid less than £6.50 and hour even when she was age 16.

Zero hour contracts stink but lots of people have to put in time at the end of their shift for which they're not paid. I'm not saying it's fair, but it happens.

No way should she not be paid for an hour she's worked - and yes she should have a written contract. I have sessional staff on zero hours contracts and all that means is they do shifts they choose to do and get paid the hours they work. Please tell her to ask about a contract and, if she doesn't feel confident at this stage asking about it, in the future to check with management she will be paid to the end of her shift.

As she is under 18 she HAS to have a half hour, unpaid break every four hours. So she should have had i guess two half hour breaks today which she won't be paid for, so she works till 9 to make her shift up to 8 paid hours maybe?

shes just come in. she said she was on tills for a while this apprently is classed as her till. she then went of to do other stuff. but the till that someone else is now on is apprently still her responsability. at end of the day the till was 8 pounds down. and could come out of her wages. even though she was not only one to use that till....

she actually finshes at 7...but its become the norm to stay till 8 for the 2 weeks she has been there. but tonight it was till 9.

Her minimum wage goes up to £5.13 when she's 18 and to £5.30 after October 1st,by the way. I'm wondering if they're hoping she'll quit before they have to increase her pay.

It's not sports direct is it?

If she is an hourly paid employee they have to pay her for the hours she works.

Also if she is under 18 she can not work more than 8 hours a day.

Report
ghostspirit · 19/06/2015 22:12

she would not quit sounds bad when i say this but shes quite gulible. shes only on trial she they could get rid if they want cant they? or just not give her any hours?
