AIBU?

To hope they shit themselves?

I have just very nearly had a car crash this afternoon which would probably have resulted in serious damage to the other driver not just their car.

Thankfully, my reactions are bloody good and my car is practically brand new so the brakes are all in fine working order.

There I am, happily driving along the road, one car several lengths in front and one a bit further behind me. The part of the road I am on is NSL and I'm doing about 45mph.

To my left is a private driveway, with plenty of room to position your car so that you can both see and turn either way. (I know what it's like, I've come out of it myself). I can see the car waiting to come out, they watch the first car go past, then for some completely inexplicable dangerous fucking reason they pull out on me really fucking slowly.

I've had no choice but to do an emergency stop, only narrowly missing their tiny little car with my much larger and more robust estate car, whilst I sit in horror watching the car behind me getting closer and closer. Thankfully, they were far enough back to be able to stop also.

However, whilst I am sat there thinking fuck fuck fuck, the bastard who's caused all this just merrily carries on like nothing has happened.

This is the bit that has really annoyed me, I totally accept that people have lapses in judgement every now and then. Apparently it is surprisingly common from what my DH tells me (he's a fireman) and from accidents friends have had But surely when you have one of these lapses you fucking acknowledge it, a hand gesture to say sorry, a mouthing of the word sorry you don't just drive away.

I very rarely wish ill feeling upon other people, but AIBU to really hope they shit themselves literally when they saw my huge, not easy to miss car baring down on them at speed?

It's possible he was oblivious to it.

Good job you weren't doing the NSL, could've been very nasty. The dick

Jason, if he was oblivious he shouldn't be on the road!

Was it the same postman that pulled out in front of me at the roundabout an hour ago? Didn't even look... My car is a nice big family saloon, so you can't miss it!
Glad you are ok, apart from a bit shocked.
No ynbu.

Did you beep your horn?

I had a similar near-miss when some fuckwit turned left onto a nsl road and pulled out in front of me when he was towing a fucking caravan. He then tootled on at 40mph and caused a massive tailback. Angry

Some people are just totally oblivious, I had one pull out in front of me in a supermarket car park. I just knew he was going to so was prepared. He then stopped as he drove past the petrol station, assuming he thought 'oh I need petrol' then stuck it in reverse and only stopped moving when I held my hand on the horn. No awareness that I was there at all! My eldest is learning to drive I always say you have to watch for everyone else!

I had a woman pull out on me at a crossroad (I was on the main road) I had to emergency stop and it shook me up a bit and upset my DC but she stopped immediately in the middle of the road which wasn't the smartest thing to do and was mouthing sorry and looked really shaken up too, of course I mouthed that it was fine and she drove off, I felt for her. People do have moments like this and it does happen but you're right a simple mouthing of 'sorry' would have been the right thing to do.

Road rage/mood can change in an instant i find - if i fuck up, i will look horrified and mouth SORRY as obviously as i can, and if other people fuck up and do the same, it stops me feeling really grumpy/angry (i know feeling angry when someone nearly kills you due to their lack of care is a bit frowned on, and no i dont need anger management lessons thanks)

Yes, I beeped my horn as I was applying the brakes.

Bizarrely, my thoughts, after the initial fuck fuck fuck, was shit my car is going to destroy them. I wasn't worried about myself at all.

And I am fine thanks, was shaking when I first got out the car when I got home but fine now. I will be having a large drink later tho when I go out!

I had an accident in similar circumstances, with the other driver making a huge error. In this case she made a right turn across my path - I was going straight along a main road at 30mph - and even after we had crashed into each other she couldn't understand what she had done wrong. The actually collision didn't scare me nearly as much as the thought that she has been driving for years merrily turning right across people's paths without giving way, and clearly it's only luck that had saved her until that day.

So, not only did I not get an apology, but I had to listen to her tell me how it was all my fault! I just smiled and said the insurers would sort it out.

I would have beeped like anything just to alert them to the fact there was nearly a crash.

Glad you are OK though.

Must be the week for it. A v young girl driver pulled backwards off a drive into my path without even looking, I did an emergency stop but she was busily talking to her mate who didn't even notice i was about a foot from her door. Confused

Off she drove oblivious to it all. Frightening.

I was once stationary in a line of cars on a small incline. The woman in front of me, who clearly wasn't paying attention, suddenly rolled backwards and only stopped when she met my bumper. She then proceeded to leap out and accuse me of 'driving straight into the back of her'. I protested, and a passing pedestrian even backed me up, but she absolutely would not have it, stomped back to her car and drove off.
Still fills me with absolute rage 15 odd years later - the sheer injustice of it! DH finds it hilarious even now that I won't pull up closely behind any car that's on a hill, I always have to give them at least a 10 foot gap in case some other numpty is unaware that their car is actually moving backwards. Smile

Somebody almost killed us on the motorway once.

It was the M62 approaching Manchester. I was quite happily driving along in the inside lane. Other cars were travelling in the overtaking lane next to me. It was busy as that stretch usually is.

A driver parked up on the hard shoulder suddenly pulled out, in first gear onto the carriageway.......the carriageway I was doing at least 70 on Hmm I couldn't pull over as cars were overtaking me. What possessed her I couldn't imagine!

I knew I was going to crash and it'd be a baddun, so braked as hard as I could to try and minimise injury. All kinds of thoughts flashed through my head, but I had literally nowhere to go.

The driver pulled back in just at the last minute. I rammed on my horn hard as I shit past. The fucking little bitch gesticulated at me. I felt like bloody killing her as my ds was in the back seat Angry

She had no fucking idea of motorway rules whatsoever.

A family friend, who was a police driving instructor, was once waiting, in icy weather, at a set of lights on the slope of a bridge (over an Underground station). As he was waiting, he noticed the car in front was starting to slide backwards on the ice. He gently moved his car from behind the car, into the adjacent lane. The car carried on sliding, and hit the car behind family friends.

Driver of hit car got out and started banging on that the accident was family friends fault, and that he shouldn't have moved. Things quietened down when family friend got out Grin. As he told the driver (and me when he taught me). "Driving doesn't stop when the car does."

Shock hidden that sounds terrifying. I have often seen people trying to rejoin from the hard shoulder. they don't seem to want to get any speed up. Confused

I wonder if it was an older person? In my area recently there have been several nasty accidents caused by elderly people who just don't know when to give up, and whose families just won't upset them by insisting.

I had a motorway lesson after passing my test and was taught to get up to a matching speed before joining the main carriageway.

People should be made to have a motorway lesson after passing. It should be a compulsory add on to the driving test.

Sounds awful OP.
Hidden- how terrifying. I completely agree that people should be made to take a Motorway lesson after passing. Too many people haven't got a clue about motorway driving. I drive on the M25 a lot for work and really notice it on weekends as people go on it that don't usually and haven't got any idea how to drive on it.
It's really frustrating as it's literally playing with people's lives.

The woman in my example was elderly, but the man who hit me the year before was in his 30s.

Agree. I can understand not wanting learners on a motorway but once you pass your base test you should have to do a few hours on the motorway before you get your licence.

YY I have never understood how you are allowed to motorway drive as soon as you have passed your test.

My husband had someone pull out on him crashing into the side of our car. She didn't even apologise, seemed shocked apparently.

A lot of bloody hassle caused by someone not paying attention
