AIBU?

to think there are some words people almost never use honestly?

To describe themselves.

For example, if someone feels the need to tell you they're trustworthy or honest, the opposite is almost certainly true.

Laid back/easy going is another.

And I've lost count of the number of "pragmatic" people I've worked with who are anything but.

Well.......mil once said after a discussion we'd had, "I don't care what you think, I'm a good person"...... So I know where you're coming from Grin

'I'm not being funny/rude/racist/mean, but...'

Yes, yes you are

I think people who go on about how honest they are and how they "tell it like it is" usually mean they like being mean to people.

People literally never use the word literally correctly.

You're right Rink, I'm probably thinking of situations where people volunteer the information, rather than being asked.

The Incredible I am very straight with people, I don't do it to be mean/rude/offensive, I'd just rather be honest than billshit people or be two faced.

"I'm the kind of person who, you know, likes to sit back and think about stuff before I say something, at the end of the day." Shudder. Having already galloped across a room to greet somebody, shrieking. Didn't think too hard about that one, did you, sweetheart?

YANBU, OP. However, some people use this in a piss poor effort to throw people off the scent, but I really think some really just have zero self-awareness, or perhaps think saying the words makes it so.

I used to work with a woman who was a complete bully. Made my life hell and was constantly gossiping, belittling, telling lies about other staff. She was always telling people how kind and good she was! She was one of the most unkind people I have ever met. I have never heard anyone else describe themselves as good/ kind in that way. Surely if you are a good/ kind person people will notice that without it being drilled into them.

People who tell you they are funny are never funny they are usually just scouse . Also laughing manically at everything is not the same as having a good sense of humour or being funny.

People who say "I'm a nice person, but if you hurt/upset my children I'll go ballistic"...

Well, you're probably not that nice then, are you?

I have a friend who, at the beginning of our friendship, told me how people always turn to her in crisis and people always tell her their troubles.

Turns out she's just really nosey and likes to get involved in shit that doesn't concern her. She's also very opinionated and judgemental and gives her opinion whether you're looking for it or not. I still socialise with her but I keep most personal stuff to myself

She also tells people she's not materialistic and money doesn't bother her but every time you see her she talks about a shopping trip or lending someone money or her new kitchen floor that she 'just paid a man' to do

My MIL AND my DM are both ones for insisting how they don't like to talk about themselves a lot, and hate it when people dominate the conversation with stories about themselves over and over again ...

and guess what?

MillyMollyMandy I work with someone exactly like that. She can be so nasty yet acts like she can walk on water.
Btw I loved MillyMollyMandy when I was little Grin

I think that a lot of self-descriptions are entirely deluded. The ones used by people with least self-knowledge seem often to be 'bubbly' (code for 'I never shut up, but you're supposed to like my prattle') and 'telling it like it is' (monumentally tactless, potentially overtly racist/sexist, and assumes everyone is thinking it, but only s/he has the courage to say it).

Betty - me too! Fab book!

Just thought of another one... Those who describe themselves as mad/ crazy/ quirky. Usually just dull or bloody annoying!

Laid back are always uptight control freaks. I never apologies before I'm rude, I'm just rude!!!! (how rude normally occurs to me 24hrs after I've said something or as I'm walking away) I've learned to cringe but keep on walking!

MrsKoala YY dh (scouse family but down south long term) always says that. I remember someone saying in a jocular way "Eeh you two look like you're going to a funeral" at Lime St Station. Mr Squizita said "Yeah actually, we're burying my mother." The other person actually blistered "well you could've said"!?! What to strangers so they don't make jokes about why we're wearing black suits?

Someone I work with got voted the most bubbly joyful person in the office recently. I must be seeing her all wrong as all I get is a talking-about-myself-contantly in a very loud voice and being rather crude with it.... Maybe its me Grin

Confusing loaned and borrowed drives me daft, when I hear "can I loan a pencil?" I have started replying "no thanks I've already got one."

I hate people who "won't suffer fools gladly". They're horrible to other people but are quite upset when people are horrible back.

There are a lot of people who "don't want to gossip". So shut up telling me about what you over/misheard about someone else then!
