AIBU?

To be gutted about nail extensions?

NailDisasterGirl · 15/06/2015 19:52

I had nexgen nail extensions done on Friday by a woman who rents a room in a local hairdressers. They cost £30.

By yesterday 4 had fallen off just by me doing day to day things such as brushing my hair and opening the car door. My nails underneath are totally fucked and my nails look a mess with some false ones and some ruined short ones.

I have sent a text to the nail technician and she is now on holiday for 2 weeks and has suggested I buy some cheap nail varnish remover and remove them myself sad

These were meant to be such a treat and now I just look a mess and am out of pocket!

That's not good at all! Buy pure acetone to soak them off. Think I would be asking for a refund on her return!! What did she do to ruin your own nails?

They're ruined because when the tips came off they pulled off layers of nail.

That's crap, I got mine done last week and they take a beating as I have five kid's, no dishwasher etc abd mine last 2-3 wks, my technician Saif if I had any problems in the first week or so to call her and she would repair for free.

Take photographs, send them to her and tell her you expect them to be replaced when she gets back...if you don't trust her then tell her...make it clear...that you want a refund. If she gets snotty, post pics on Facebook.

I go to a high street nail bar for mine. £25 and the blighters don't shift, they are acrylic so I don't know if that makes a difference.

Take pictures of your nails before you do anything to them, then you may as well take them all off. It's likely that your nails would have been fucked underneath even if they had been put on properly, but it's worth going to see her as soon as she's back at work to see what she offers.

According to the article I have just read, your own nails should not be harmed! That's crap! Don't leave it here. Take it further.

Acrylic/uv gel/whatever nails should not ping off.

It was poor application on her part.

Please take pictures even if it's on your mobile, and ask her if she has insurance. (Public liability) and if she is a member of the beauty guild.

Soak them off slowly and heat the acetone by using glass bowls and placing the acetone in one bowl and hot water in the bottom bowl and place the acetone bowl on top. Don't throw the acetone down the sink. Soak with kitchen towell and put in the bin. The acetone will burn the plastic sink pipe. Don't file or buff your nails. Apply a rich moisturising cream or sudo crem. They should start to look/feel better in a week.

Ask for your money back.

As you can tell these cowgirl nail technicians piss me off!

As long as they are applied properly and removed properly they shouldn't damage your nails. I have mine done as it stops me biting my nails and after a few weeks of false ones mine are then long enough for a gel treatment.

I agree re taking photos and emailing etc, at the least I would want them re done for free or my money back.

Jeez. I've has my shellac on for 4 weeks and it's only lifted on the bottom of one nail. I'm taking them off tomorrow because my nails are just too long.

I was told to avoid anywhere with masks and electric files. I use a high street chain.

Princess it's perfectly acceptable to use an electric file on acrylics, but NEVERRRRR on natural nails.

PrincessOfChina · 15/06/2015 22:00

Ah, thanks for the clarification. I'll keep that in mind if I need to try a new salon.

Tip and dip acrylics like nexgen are never as strong as liquid and powder.
You can't create an apex they are just flat.
What aftercare were you advised to follow?
An electric file should never be used on the natural nail plate.

glittery won't the acetone just evaporate instantly?

Report
glitteryflange · 16/06/2015 14:25

No. Just heating the acetone a little will help it work quicker = won't dry out the nails and surrounding skin as much if you were to dip your nails into cold acetone for 15/20 mins.

If you have trouble with the remaining few and if they start to get sore please stop and try again the next day. Plaster them if you have to. Sad

Dry them properly. If they start to lift try not to get them wet you'll risk infection.

oh goodness I hope they never used an electric file on your natural nail bed. Confused

Yes 200grit on false nails but never on natural nail plate.

Only use a 180 grit nail file to file your nails going one way not back and forth.

£30 for tip & dip.
Disgusting.

OP did you get your money back ?

I remove my shellac and gels with acetone and it evaporates in seconds - what am I doing wrong?!

Report
glitteryflange · 16/06/2015 16:24

No idea.
I've always been able to pour acetone from the bottle into a small glass bowl to soak gels/shellac and acrylic.

Or pour direct into lint wipes and wrap around nails and cover with foil.

I just had my nails done, same problem! Gel with some acrylic in? Can't remember the name. Lost bits in less than a week, they told me id have to pay to fix!
Iv soaked them off and my nails are fucked!
I only had them in the first place to help grow my nails. Iv had to cut them so short as they were completely thin.

Can I recommend getting a nail treatment rather than acrylics to help your nails grow? OPI - Nail Envy or Nailtiques - Formula 2 are my top faves.

If you want to grow your nails then just getting gel polish helps with strength.
Even better if you can find a salon that offers IBX which is a curable nail strengthener that you can use under gel polish.

Sounds awful. I've had shellac chip off after a day before, makes you feel so cheated.

On this theme, I'd like extensions on my nails and shellac on my toes ahead of my holiday. Do any MNer know where to go on the high street without breaking the bank?

London - was looking for high street though. A bar in Debenhams perhaps? Very central, so I can nip in after work.

Tescos now have nail bars in them. My local one does anyway.
