Re wanting to buy my daughter a rum & raisin ice cream

So we went out today to buy ice cream from Thorntons. DD, who is 7, said she wanted rum & raisin ice cream.

Woman (Muslim though I'm not sure if that was a factor in her thinking) behind the till said 'I can't serve her that'.

Bought one ice cream (there were three of us) handed it to DH and told DD & DH to go away so I could buy DD's ice cream without having the woman tell us she couldn't give it to her. DD got upset and refused, because she didn't know what was going on and thought she wasn't going to get any ice cream. So gave up trying to buy more ice creams, and just walked off, and we ended up with just one ice cream between the three of us.

Won't be going back there, either, if this woman is serving.

AIBU to think I should be able to buy my child an ice cream?

How do you know she was Muslim? You lost me at that point.

"How do you know she was Muslim? "

Because she was wearing a jilbab.

Muslim face covering. I might not have used the correct term.

head covering rather, her hair was covered, not her face.

Server was being daft. There is no actual rum in most rum and raisin ice cream, just rum flavouring.

Complain to the manager.

But why is it relevant to your post?

A quick google has told me that Thorntons staff aren't allowed to sell rum and raisin ice cream to kids.

She was being daft, no doubt, but I'm not sure why being Muslim relates to that!

Do you mean this Worra?

Just bin Googling meself.

Not sure her personal religious beliefs are relevant.

"But why is it relevant to your post?"

Alcohol is considered haram by Islam. I am not sure if it was a factor in her thinking, but it might have been.

Why do most people almost assume the worst when it comes to Muslims?

Report
OliveCane · 11/06/2015 23:41

Alcohol may be forbidden but a Muslim has a religious duty to fulfil his or her contractual obligation which is to serve her customers!

Yep that's the one (of many) stories on it SaucyJack

OP, did you not think to google or contanct Thorntons before assuming it was because the woman was muslim?

Worra, according to this: www.huntspost.co.uk/hunts-life/id_required_to_buy_ice_cream_1_409111

that was in 2007, and they were 'working to reduce the alcohol content' from 0.7% to below the 0.5% limit.

You would think they would have done it by now.

Interesting how the OP made an assumption that this was somehow connected to the server's choice of head covering religion. The poor woman was just trying to do her job by the sound of it!

A jilbab is something different. There are several stories online saying that it's a legal requirement for that ice that ID is supplied because of the level of alcohol. So nothing to do with her religion, just poor customer service.

It isn't down to the individual member of staff, it is shop policy. It is also illegal to sell liquer chocolates to under 16s (although think this is about to change)

Well have you asked Thorntons whether they have done it by now?

Did you ask the woman why she couldn't serve your DD the ice cream?

Or did you just assume it was because she's muslim?

Just out of curiosity why didn't you ask her at the time why on earth she was refusing you? Obviously she thought it was neat rum in the icecream.....silly women. However you could have purchased it & passed it to DD and grinned at the silly women in a very sarcastic way! Whilst saying very loudly to DD "enjoy every single mouthful" That's just me though. Grin x

I think the rum and raisin thing is a silly rule! Goodness me!

OP didn't make any assumptions in her post - just commented that she didn't know if it was a factor or not.

msgrinch · 11/06/2015 23:45

They're not allowed to serve it to children. Nor because of their religion because of the alcohol content and the companies rules. I don't think her being Muslim has anything to do with it.
