AIBU to cook raw meat that's had a fly on it...

It was covered but obviously not well enough. Sausages and pork fillets. Don't know how long the fly was in there. Would you, could you, should you? Don't want to make anyone ill but seems a waste of a meat. Not sure if the cooking will get rid of any bugs... Help - need to get dinner on in an hour.

Yes,..it will be fine. Cooking will destroy anything on the meat.
People probably eat stuff that flies have landed on quite often without any harm.

Bear in mind that various insects have been all over the veg we eat.

Yup cook it. If you go to any butchers you'll see meat in the counter that is behind a glass partition, but uncovered on their side, as well as big joints hanging in the open air. I'm sure even the most hygienic places can't stop flies popping in for a browse every now and then...

Why would you wash it before you cook it?? Cooking it is going to zap any bugs on it?

Thanks everyone. I've actually defrosted more sausages for the kids (esp. as we have someone else's kid here). My and DH will eat the pork fillets later, cooked thoroughly....

I just cannot get my head around anyone who thinks washing meat actually achieved anything. Unless you're washing it with detergent and at a high temperature, all you're doing is smearing whatever was on it, everywhere else on it. The heat of cooking will kill anything that's on there. And the worst stuff on there is unlikely to have been deposited by the fly.

I hardly ever swear on here - FFS, in my mind means 'For Flip's Sake'. But of course, you take from it what you will.

And you really never thought about uncovered bakery products, which to my mind, offer far more health risks than an insect landing on something which is going to be cooked (which means, the heat will kill any potential germs).

If the fly didn't lay eggs (which you will be able to see) then there is no need to wash the meat. I imagine most raw meat and veg has been touched by flies, and worse. At least ifyou are the one doing the cooking then you can be sure there is no contamination that will cause illness. Trust yourself at least as much as all the other people that prepare your food.

Flies sit on food all the time! Would you chuck all of it normally?! This is crazy! I've never heard of anyone doing that, this is why we have a problem with food being chucked out too much in this country.

TBH - not had this before. I always cover raw meat - one just slipped through. That was why I was asking. And I've not chucked it all. Just the sausages for the kids. Playing safe...
