It's normal, it's just a bit of blood with normal discharge.

Low progesterone probably. Are your periods heavier than before?

I used to get this at the end of every period. Never bothered me and didn't really know what it was. In fact, signified that the period was coming to an end. I never had it INSTEAD of blood, though.

I think the general rule is, if there is pain or an odour associated with it, then you should get it checked out.

I have this sometimes, not every period, maybe every other one. Also 'clots' (which is definitely tmi!).

If I have brown discharge, it's just before a period, not instead of.

what would suddenly cause low progestrone?

My mum told me it is old blood when I questioned it as a teenager.

Sev - makes sense, probably a bit left over from last period when the cervix opens.

It's usually 'old' blood (from the previous cycle) which is usually followed in a couple of days by a normal period. It's quite normal - lots of my friends (late 30s and early 40s) have mentioned it. Something to do with changes in hormone levels as menopause approaches in the distance.

If you're at all concerned, see your GP.

I have this quite a lot. Usually come on a few days later or I get it at the end of my period. I'm mid 20s.

I always have it. It's like the 'warning' for my real period as far as I'm concerned. The end of my period is light and browner too.

Is it not normal? Is it always connected to low progesterone?

NannyR · 09/06/2015 15:38

I have always had this, every period and a day or so at the end as well. It's normal for my cycle.

I have this with every period for about 3-4 days before my period I see it as my body warning me my period is coming, I always presumed it was normal.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 09/06/2015 15:42

Normal for me too. Sometimes just before my period but almost always at the end.

It's been normal for me for as long as I can remember. I do have PCOS too but don't think there is any connection.

I've always had it a bit, not so much when on the pill but after stopping taking it and now after two dcs I've still got it.

I always have at least two days of brown stuff before period starts and then about two days afterwards. I always presumed it was normal and it certainly hasn't affected me having children Smile

Milky I get it, usually before my heavy period but occasionally in the past it's been all I've had. I have had my progesterone levels checked along with everything else both recently and several times in the past. They are all normal and I am fertile. I'm mid 30's.

I don't think you have anything to worry about but to put your mind at rest, pop to your GP and they can arrange for the nurse to do a blood test. Very easy and very routine.

But like I say, ime it's totally normal. Flowers
