AIBU?

not tot want to eat halal meat?

I am finding it harder and harder to avoid. I do my best to ensure any meat I eat has lived and died humanely, and I think a lot of halal meat dies cruelly. I don't want to eat it. But all meat provided at work is halal. Much of the places to eat out cheaply around work and home is halal, and I've even heard a lot of the local super market meat is also halal, even if it isn't marked.

Why can't we have an option of guaranteed non halal meat clearly marked and available?

YANBU. The only way you could avoid it is to stop eating meat dishes outside of your own home. As I understand it supermarket meat should be marked as halal. I have seen separate parts of a display marked as halal. You could buy organic or stop eating meat completely. It's ridiculous that animals have to die like that without being stunned first because of religion. I don't eat meat anyway but if I did I would be pretty pissed off that information on the method of slaughter was not more freely available.

Most Halal meat in the UK is pre stunned these days, the very small amount that isn't is expensive and more likely to be sold in specialist butchers than supermarkets or cheap restaurants.
So don't worry, if the meat you're buying isn't pre stunned it is very likely to be labelled as such so they can charge more. The mass produced supermarket "stealth Halal" stuff just has a prayer tape running in the slaughter house and the stock can't be slaughtered in front of each other.

Also if you read Not on the Label by Felicity Lawrence you'll learn that stunning doesn't always work, then non-ritual slaughter is actually more brutal, particularly for chickens.
If you want to avoid cruelty completely become veggie. If you still want meat that's not had a horrible time of it then game is a better option.

Vegetarian is the way to go.

If you have issues with it you should consider becoming vegetarian because what goes on in the slaughter house is never pretty for the animals halal or not

I agree I don't want to eat Halal meat either. My grandfather raised cattle for beef and it's not nice killing any animal but if it has to be done then for me it has to be done humanely.

Go veggie!

Unless you are Sikh YABU because there is no material difference between halal and non halal meat as slaughtered here in the UK, except the tape of the Qur'an playing and the animals not seeing the others being killed. The vast majority of scholars say that stunning is fine so long as it isn't the electric shock that kills the animal.

For the purposes of full disclosure I am a Muslim but don't bother with halal meat because of the minimal difference.

As other posters mentioned, if you are worried about humane slaughter then I think you will have to avoid all meat.

Just out of interest, what did you imagine halal slaughter involved, as opposed to normal procedures?

Don't imagine conditions are any better in non- halal slaughter houses.
My OHs brother worked in an abbatoir and some of the stories would shock you.

What other pp's have said - I believe over 80% of halal meat in the uk is stunned before slaughter anyway, so not a lot different to non halal.

Tbh, if you are that concerned about animal welfare most supermarkets meat will be a no no. Vegetarian/veganism is your best bet, or sticking to farm shops etc with a good reputation. The meat trade is pretty cruel.

If you are so concerned about animal welfare then go veggie.

Or are you just a GF? Hmm

Yanbu. But you probably don't have to eat meat in your work canteen. I would probably sooner take a packed lunch than support an establishment which sells halal meat. At the same time, I understand why they do it, as I guess there are fewer people who care about eating halal meat than there are people who want to eat it.

YANBU.

Part of the reason I stopped eating meat.

If you want "cheap" meat, then it's likely that cruelty will be involved, whether it is halal or not.

If you really cared, I doubt you'd eat meat at all.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 09/06/2015 07:51

If you're bothered about animal welfare then you should only eat meat at home because you have no clue about the welfare conditions of non halal meat you eat out.
Surely it's only curry houses and kebab shops/Middle eastern restaurants that serve halal meat?

Do you think that non-halal meat is gently put to sleep with soothing music and wrapped in a cosy blanket?

The anti-halal attitude is firmly rooted in racism, and I rarely jump to the "it's racist!" position. ALL meat is the result of an appalling death for the animal. Choosing meat slaughtered with one particular market in mind as being "unethical" is meaningless. Slaughter is inhumane by its very definition.

If you're looking for meat from an animal that has had a slightly less grim life than the rest, the standard of living for organically raised animals is substantially higher than non-organic, so you ought to make that your identifier, not the slaughter.

YANBU. Establishments that serve meat should have both halal and non-halal as, eg, Sikhs are forbidden to eat meat that has been ritually slaughtered, and if you are going to cater for one faith in a non-faith establishment you should cater to them all.

(But going veggie is probably the easiest path when you can't be sure of the origin of the meat.)

Aermingers · 09/06/2015 07:54

I don't either. I tend to be much more likely to eat meat at home these days. If in doubt I go for the vegetarian option.

Not sure that's actually true.

Take lamb - non halal lamb go into a race (like a walkway) same as they would have done countless times at home to have tags checked/be wormed/weighed/feet done. They go in on groups from their own farm. The front lamb goes round a corner in the race, where the others can't see it. It is stunned and then killed. It doesn't know anything about it. And no others witness it.

Halal meat is not supposed to be stunned and then has its throat slit and bleeds to death.

It is totally inhumane and has no place in 2015 Britainor anywhere else

I find it totally bizarre that people get all aerated about halal meat but are perfectly happy to eat regular meat. Non halal abattoirs are every bit as grim and cruel you know. The animals aren't licked to death by kittens.

WellErrr sorry, that's incorrect. 88% of halal meat in the uk IS stunned before slaughter. As long as the stun does not kill the animal its not considered Haram. I live in the ME and have no time for islam or any other religion but I do get annoyed at the hysteria and incorrect twaddle that scaremongers peddle.
