AIBU?

To think that if there is a lock on the bathroom door, you use it?!

New levels of madness from the ILs.

FIL will not lock a door in his own house. Instead, he insists that you should knock the bathroom door before going in.

I did not know this rule. I firmly believe he is BU Shock

Well in our house if the bathroom or toilet door is shut it means someone's in there.

His house, his rules, so yes YABU.

Ha, ha. I must admit I don't even shut the toilet door. I usually try to make the effort when we have guests though.

We don't lock our bathroom door, but if we are at someone else's house I'll lock the door if it has one.

The door wasn't even properly shut. It was left ajar!

well, yes, maybe he is but now you know this it's easy to just knock. Or ask where he is if you can't see him and you need the loo.

Hassled · 06/06/2015 13:38

You didn't walk in and find him mid-poo, did you? That can't have been good.

SantanaLopez · 06/06/2015 13:42

Indeed I did.

He is BU

YANBU

Your own house your own rules when you are alone in your house but you lock the door when in the bat / doing a poo if there are guests in your house. It's just common sense.

For some odd reason never got round to fitting it we don't have a lock on our loo.

Rule is:

If door is open - vacant

If door shut -engaged.

But what if the door is only partially shut? So many grey areas for unsuspecting visitors!

we have bathroom issues when the ILs visit!!

....they make a huge palaver about locking themselves in, only the bleeding door doesn't shut properly and if you do actually manage to get it snicked shut then there is a very strict routine to perform to get the lock to function, and an equally complex, but subtly different key manoeuvre to unlock the door

or failing that drag the laundry basket across the room, wake the entire household in the dead of night and barricade yourself in there.

AND they like to leave ALL doors firmly closed No.Matter.What.

so no one ever knows if there is anyone in the bathroom if they are here...you have to run about the building questioning everyone as to the whereabouts of missing guests.

drives me crazy raving batcrap cuckoo doo-lally

Leave the fucking door open, and close it if you are in there. GAVEL!

But CaTs you've just said your door doesn't close!

I will often close bathroom doors to keep the poo pong from pervading the house. What's so hard about putting a lock on?

I have to remind myself to lock it if there are 'extra' people in the house. Years of habit as a SAHM to young children when I just didn't bother and when I was young it was often just me and DM.

Not locking it on principle when you could is a bit grim tho

Naughtyspud · 06/06/2015 14:55

Having said that, now the DCs are a bit older I sometimes lock myself in just for 5 minutes piece Smile

CaTsMaMmA · 06/06/2015 15:01

I suppose I asked for that argy :o ....it closes enough to leave no gaps, but if you needed to close it properly then it's a right malarkey
...a shove to the bottom, lift and turn the knob, heave ho at about shoulder height and put some weight into it.

but you can give is a small shove and there are no gaps and then leave it ajar as you leave so noone is crossing their legs all afternoon and casting increasingly anxious glances up the stairs

Surely for common decency you should lock the bloody door when you have guests.
Shock to all those people who don't have a lock on their toilet/bathroom doors and leave them open when not in use! Where you born in a barn or something?
Can't stand walking past a toilet and the door being left open. I always shut it.
