Cat wanting to come in. Who IBU?

OK, so this happened a few weeks ago, but it is still bothering me in a way I can't explain. I don't lay awake at night or anything, but still...

I was in the kitchen about 6pm carving a chicken. My kitchen is at the front of the house, so people going past can see me if I am in there.

I was aware of my cat outside the front door, wanting to come in. He was mewing from time to time but not excessively or desperately pleading , but I wanted to get the chicken carved and away before I let him. He probably would have had to wait another 15 minutes. It wasn't cold or raining.

Anyway a lady with a little girl, who looked to be aged about 6 or 7 knocked at the door. Of course as soon as I opened it, the cat ran in (heady with the scent of chicken no doubt). The lady said that she had been going past and saw that my cat wanted to come in, and could I please let him in as it was upsetting her daughter to hear him mew.

I had no idea what to say, so just thanked her () and shut the door.

She was not a neighbour, I had not seen her before, or since. But I guess I am really surprised that she would even do that. My cat had only been out there a little while but she obviously thought I was cruel leaving him there at all.

I have much bigger problems in my life than this, but this still bothers me.

Was IBU leaving the cat out whilst I carved a chicken, or was she BU to knock my door and to let him in so her daughter was not upset?

I would only have knocked if I could see the cat was injured or was being attacked and it was clear you hadn't realised.

Not to mention my cat would have eaten the flipping chicken by the time I got back to it. x

He was laying on the Welcome Mat more than likely. He is huge, and has dominated the entire area for the last 18 month's. Even attacking foxes and urban badgers. Real tough bugger. He certainly has never given of a vulnerable vibe before .

The Cat shouldn't even need to ask to be let in - don't keep it waiting.

You shouldn't be trying to keep the chicken away from The Cat. You should be happy with whatever scraps The Cat deigns to leave you.

My cat would mew at the front door to get in, scoff as much chicken as possible, and then run right back out through the cat flap at the back (which she can get in and out of perfectly fine) and then be back at the front sort mewing in 10 min. So yanbu!

I assume you just wanted to make sure the chicken was cooked perfectly before placing the entire thing in your cat's favourite bowl as a lovely surprise for when he came in? In which case YANBU

Unless it was really cold or your cat was starving hungry YANBU and I think the woman sounds bizarre tbh. I would never knock on someone's door like that unless something ACTUALLY cruel / negligent was happening.

I regularly leave one of my cats mewwing outside because he's an idiot who doesn't know the difference between a door and a window. We live in a first floor flat and recently he's worked out where the back of the house is, but hasn't worked out we can't let him in through a first floor window. He sits on the ground under the window mewwing for ages. If I open the front door and call him he doesn't seem to hear me. Stupid cat. If he comes to the front door I let him in straight away!

Next door's cat often mews at our door, I don't let him in, I'd be really miffed if someone knocked on the door and the cat came in as a result of me opening the door - and that someone thought I was being cruel to a mad cat who isn't even mine.

Plus my cat often mews to be let in (not at the front door though) and and then when you do he saunters away, so it's none of anyone's business whether he comes in or not, it's up to me.

The lady's kid needs to toughen up. She's going to see a lot worse than a mewing cat during her lifetime and life's lessons need to start early to prepare them for this.

You need to learn to carve chicken with your elbows in a defensive posture - were you expecting cat to take a flying leap and steal some chicken before you could stop it?

How funny. I thought that I was over sensitive but even I could walk past a mewing cat!

I swear my two cats have a running competition going on to see who can get the door opened for them the most. Sometimes they mew at the front door, run through the house and miaow to go out of the back door. Saves them walking round the outside of the house!

I put the cats out before trying to dissect a chicken. One of mine actually stole a red hot bird from the oven, dragged it onto the lawn and growled at anyone going near him and his booty. He ate the lot and only suffered scorched paws from the oven.
I'd only diverted my attention to finding the oven gloves for a second or two, honest.
But he made a greasy mess of the kitchen floor and slept for hours while he struggled to digest our dinner. So ynbu.

My cats have 2 approaches: dcat1 goes batshit crazy, up on her back legs, pawing the window and miaowing as though she hasn't been fed for weeks and there is a pack of rabid dogs after her, dcat2 sits right up at the other window and just silently states through it at me like she wants to kill me. Neither are remotely effective, but there again I am mean.

Pyjamacat will miaow at the kitchen window after waiting until he sees someone enter the kitchen. He then gets let in only to go to the door and ask to get back out
If passers by all knocked the door every time this happens, I'd be as well sitting outside with him all day.
