Not sure if I'm overreacting.

A semi famous social media person uploaded a photo to there Instagram of them with a sellotape wrapped around their face up to their nose to resemble tubes. Making fun of the film Fault in our Stars, a film about a girl with cancer.

I said I found it disgusting to be told I shouldn't be offended because

"It's a fucking film! She didn't really have cancer! Go to bed you fucking noodle!"

Seriously aibu?

I think offence is such a personal thing really, so YANBU if you find it offensive but I would say equally YANBU if you didn't.

I don't think it's particularly funny but I can't take offence at it either.

Unhelpful of me I know Grin

Because not being able to breathe is hilarious Hmm

Yanbu it may just be a film but cancer is real.

Offensive and disrespectful imo

But I can imagine if you've known someone with cancer, it would be very upsetting.

I feel quite defensive of this film because it was the first one my DD and all her besties went to at the cinema without a grown up, and they all sobbed buckets.

It's a book/film DESIGNED to push your buttons - it's a weepie.

So it's a YNBU from me.

(have a glass of water before you crash!)

So who made the remark that upset you? The person who'd posted the photo, or a random commenter?

Well...either way really...that's kind of what happens on the internet. It's crap when people feel the need to have a go at you for no good reason, but it's how it goes. Nothing you can do about it really.

So if you're going to be on the internet much more in future, I'd suggest a) developing a thicker skin and b) being careful not to accidentally insult people or call them bullies or anything, otherwise you might find people go out of their way to insult you even more.

I would find it disturbing. Why would anyone want to make fun of someone with cancer?

anotherdayanothername1 · 24/05/2015 23:42

Who is it?

Report
LionsTeeth · 24/05/2015 23:42

Additionally offensive because the author, John Green, was inspired to write the book by a young girl he met and became friends with who had cancer and unfortunately passed away.

Oh, hang on a minute. It was someone you know irl who said this to you?

In that case, YWNBU.

That's what I'm wondering Derek

Where they just copying the character's look 'fancy dress style', or trying to be deliberately offensive to cancer victims?

During the 80s there were tons of people dressed as Elephant Man at fancy dress parties.

Not because they were trying to offend anyone with a congenital disorder/facial disfigurement, but because Elephant Man was a popular film.

See I don't get this. The internet is full of absolutely vile things like beheadings, extreme porn, torture etc and whilst this is not in the same league just because it's the Internet why is it ok?

Why is standing up and saying "this is wrong" mean you need to develop a thick skin? I'm not crying into my pillow. I'm going against the pack and saying, this isn't funny.

Apparently the logic of it is it's ok for him to pretend to have tubes up his nose impersonating a girl with cancer because she's not a real person and next apparently I'll be saying people shouldn't take photos with their eyes open in case they offend people who have no eyes .... Right ... Exactly the same thing Hmm

Does that mean the actress in the film is taking the piss out of cancer patients as she doesn't have it and was wearing fake tubes?

No the same way I don't think the actors in Schindlers List were taking the piss out of Holocaust victims.

However would you find it amusing if I posted a joke about the holocaust or took a funny photo in a gas chamber pretending to be dying?

Pretty much a whole world of difference.

HE is making fun of a character that has cancer by sticking rolled sellotape to his nose to look like tubes.

Well Derek you seem like the sort of person that would have found someone dressing up as the World Trade Centre hilarious so we are thankfully very different.

Is the World Trade Centre a film?! No, so not sure what the connection is that you are trying and failing to make

I guess you just failed to read the news. Never mind.
