AIBU?

Posting scan pictures of genitals on the Pregnancy board

There seems to have been a recent influx of threads with scan photos, asking if people want to have a look and guess the sex of the baby using 'nub theory' or some other obscure criteria.

Is it just me who finds this rather distasteful? I'd rather not show loads of strangers my unborn child's bits, let alone stare at someone else's.

AIBU?

Confused

YABU. It's hardly pornography, they are excited expectant parents.

Yes, fair point, but it still pisses me off for some reason.

The skull theory and other daft stuff also pisses me off.

It seems to be the modern equivalent of dangling a ring on a bit of string really. And strangely nearly all of them have Netmums user names.

I suspect they have sent them over on a recce [paranoid]

I once saw an opening post with a photo of a newborn's soiled nappy, suggesting others follow suit so the new mums could contrast and compare.

I shit you not.

Fuck. I thought this was a parent forum. Confused

YABU. Guessing the sex of the baby is only part of the fun of pregnancy.

The only part that annoys me is when someone admits to 'being desperate for a girl/boy' then everyone tells them what they want to hear, no matter what the theories might suggest, pointlessly building them up.

YABU. If it was a clear picture of genitals rather than just a nub people wouldn't have to guess.

I've never posted pictures of mine because I'm a control freak who doesn't like the idea of randomers looking at my baby...

However, YABU - it can be an exciting time for parents & it's hardly inappropriate.. Steer clear of such threads if you don't like them, instead of sucking the joy out of them with negative comments.
The nub theory can be up to 75% effective if a clear picture/good sonographer/reasonable gestation are factored in. So it's a little more than the ring over the belly myth.

But it's never a clear picture. It's always impossible to see it. And no one here is qualified. Well probably no one who is would comment iyswim.

No,I can't see the big deal here.

It isn't really the fact it's the private parts of the baby, in that sense - I am sure no one gets off on looking at an almost unidentifiable part of an unborn child in a blurry image.

It just seems so tasteless, as well as pointless, and it's totally oversharing as well.

It's almost in the same league as astrology based relationship posts.

Yanbu. I wouldn't have wanted my parents to do this with my scan picture although I am too old to have had one

I feel intrusive seeing scan pictures of my OWN babies let alone other people's.

That may be one of the main issues I have with it. These things should be privately treasured, not stuck on the internet for complete strangers to gawp over.

I think YABU. I get that you wouldn't do it, that's totally reasonable, but I see no reason why others should not. People vary in their ways of passing the 40 or so weeks, which with your first in particular can seem very long. Live and let live - just hide the threads (which I imagine you do) and spend your time on threads with like minded people.

YANBU to be irritated by people posting asking questions that no one can answer:

am I pregnant?
what disease do I have?
will I have a boy or a girl?

YABVU to say it's tasteless or intrusive. Hmm

I have never seen these pictures. I have all topics where these pictures would be hidden, but I don't see any harm.

I have a scan picture of DS2's penis at 38 weeks. Grin

Yes, I tend to live and let live normally and have never really commented much on it before today. It just gets to me sometimes as it seems to be such a 'thing'.

I'm not saying everyone has to stop it now. I'm just registering my discomfort with it if you like, and seeing if others feel the same or I'm just oversensitive.

YABU and a bit weird.

It's a scan of a baby and its nub.

Hardly the same as posting your born child's genitals is it?

Ifyourawizardwhydouwearglasses · 06/05/2015 08:20

Why wouldn't they just ask the sonographer?

Report
Hobby2014 · 06/05/2015 08:21

I think if you feel intrusive looking at your own children's scan pics then I definitely think it's your issue. Don't most people look at their scan pictures in awe, happy etc, not going 'oh no don't look, you might or might not see something that might look like baby bits'?
