Cersei is pretty and I can't help but like the character. She's definitely ballsy Grin .

Saoirse is very similar.

Do not give your kid a Game of Thrones names.

Could go for Circe? Also a bit of an ambivalent figure but maybe a bit less eyebrow raising.

I've not come across that spelling. Is it pronounced the same as Circe?

How do you pronounce it?

Report
spancake · 28/04/2015 12:25

pronounced sir-see...

I think the standard advice is to wait until the last book has been written before picking characters to name your kid after.

(Although Cersei was grim right from the beginning tbf)

It is a pretty name tho. Plenty of "normal" names originated from books.

Squoosh has said all that needs to be said imo!

Nothing wrong with naming your kid after a fictional character. I know loads of Arwen's and Wendy's!

It really helps not to burden your child with a name that nobody will ever be able to spell, let alone pronounce. Especially if it comes from Game of Thrones!

Circe is a greek goddess / nymph so perfectly fine

Report
spancake · 28/04/2015 12:29

The thing is I'm not really naming after the character as such, I can take or leave her, I just like the name like you might hear a name in the playground and like it... I just happened to hear it on the programme.

Just don't call her Cersei if she has a brother!

Circe is nice as well, it is a beautiful classic name.

Report
squoosh · 28/04/2015 12:30

But the name only exists on the programme. It was made up by the author.

SaucyJack · 28/04/2015 12:32

Shakespeare made the name Jessica up.

Put yourself in her shoes as a teenager. Having been saddled with a fuddy duddy name (no, I won't reveal it) I elected to use my 2nd name as I got sick of being asked a)how to spell it, b) where does it come from/are you named after so and so? c) what were your mum & dad thinking of.

If you're so taken with it perhaps give her something less exotic as a first name and that as a second....

You can't name your child after a Lannister! Shock

Even if it is a lovely name.

Report
UsedtobeFeckless · 28/04/2015 12:35

I thought she was the enchantress who turned all Odyseuss' crew into pigs in The Odyssey ... ( As well as Evil Lannister Trollop in GoT ) So 10/10 for Feminist Cred there, too Grin

I'm with Saucy Jack, though - wait and see what GRR has in store ( Although the baby would probably have grown up and left home by the time he finishes the series at the rate he's going ... )

Nothing wrong with naming your kid after a fictional character. I know loads of Arwen's and Wendy's!

Peter Pan is over 100 years old, the name now exists outside of the book. Game of Thrones is less than 20.

Plus Wendy was a positive character. Cersei really isn't.

Shakespeare made the name Jessica up.

The Merchant of Venice was published in the 1590's. Jessica has a life beyond that play now.

Calling your child after a baddie who was created less than 20 years ago and who has only become a household name in the last 4 years is naff.

All names have to be used for the first time Squoosh. Jessica and Wendy would have been wacky literary choices at first.

I wouldn't name one of mine after a GoT character either, but your logic is flawed.

Are you pregnant OP? The hormones can do this. My shortlist for DS2 was Tywin, Tyrion and Theon at one point. Fortunately, when he was actually handed to me and he became an actual person I gave him a non GoT name.
