AIBU?

Video game jokes about rape; is this really acceptable?

I caught my son playing this game. After some research, I found some awful things. Here's a video I found of it. Can you imagine people laughing about rape?

I was appalled. These things are out here and I don't want my 13 year old playing games with rape in them! Why should I even have to say that?

Am I being unreasonable here? We need more regulations on this smut.

It's awful

But as it is out there, parents need to regulate their kid's internet usage a bit more too.

It's not nice. In any context. I don't like jokes about rape on tv shows or when comedians make jokes. I don't like it in games. Unfortunately all anyone can do is be very careful about their child's Internet settings and view game/movie ratings before hand.

(Not saying that you haven't checked any of that before your son played it!)

Where did your son acquire it from? Presumably he downloaded it directly from the game developers, either paying a dollar or torrenting it.

It hasn't been through any vetting, because it was created by games developers and is only available directly from them. Infact, it has been rejected from Steam (a big online game retailer) for that reason.

I'd be more concerned about what else your son is accessing from the kind of sites that appear to sell this, but the "joke" is terrible, and probably warrants further conversation on why it's not funny or clever, as well as tighter parental controls.

I'd struggle to even call it a game, it looks more like a visual novel. It's so obscure I'd wonder how he heard of it.

I try to check everything out, but I can't watch his screen 24/7. The internet is really awful :(

I find this awful but also are parents who let their kids have unfettered access to 18 rated games etc.

There are programmes like Net-nanny and also I think Virgin and Sky both have home filtering software.

Thank you for those suggestions!

Thank you everyone you are all so inspiring.

I recently just got my son back from juvenile detention and it has been a bit of an adjustment

Yes it is bizarre - and obscure- he would have had to known what it is/dig around some weird places to find it.

Could it have anything to do with his alleged criminal history?

Would giving a few details about it help?

Is that his own Youtube channel Artist? It's just that video only has 33 views

(Ignore that, followed the links and the guy lives in NYC).

I just thought it was doubly bizarre that it'd even been covered on YT, 33 views is a pittance.

No, it has too many videos. I have searched his computer for any login information, and I have not found any.

He's been in detention for the last month, regardless. He's only been home since the weekend. A man was assaulting me and he hit him with his baseball bat, and the whole thing was a nightmare.

But now he's home and he's changed. He was so innocent before. Now he's playing this garbage? I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I want to paint right now, but I'm too stressed.

Are you in the USA?

I think you need to sit with him and ask why he was playing it and how he knew about it. If he's got hold of one horrible obscure title he'll be able to get hold of potentially many more possibly from the same place he got this one (was thinking maybe he's on a forum or a subreddit).
