This really annoys me and I can't work out why.

Are you American?

Mine are pants, so yabu.

Why aren't they pants? It's a valid word to describe them?

Unless you're american, of course.

I've always used pants and knickers interchangeably (er, the words, not the garments). It's not as euphemistic sounding as the American "underwear" (god forbid you should specify which bit of under your clothes it's going on) and not as vile as [shudders] "panties", which sounds like you're in crap 70s porn.

I sometimes call them "pants" although I prefer "knickers". The other " p" word though is dreadful!

I wear pants and I tell dd to put her pants on.

Knickers are huge. Big Bridget Jones type underwear.

Pants are your everyday underwear.

Unless you are American, in which case pants are trousers, and knickers is a hilarious word.

Panties sounds like a porn term crossed with something a child would say, and makes me cringe. It should be wiped from vocabulary.

does remind me though of our nurse at our surgery and after a smear she always says "Pop your panties back on and I will see you in a mo" as she goes the other side of the curtain to protect my modesty WHEN SHE HAS JUST LOOKED IN MY FANGOLINA

Pants sounds wrong to me - I always think of pants as a man's for some reason.

No, infinity, pants are huge and knickers are small and sexy! Although when I think about knickerbockers, perhaps I'm wrong. But that's how I always think of it.

My sister called them 'knick knicks' a few months ago and I had to restrain myself...

Sorry its knickers for me although my DH calls mine ' knee length donkey droppers' for some reason

I don't like the word 'pants', knickers sounds like a pretend word but. I do just say underwear as in 'I need to buy some new underwear' as I never need to specify if it's a bra or notHmm I never wear one without the other so I always put my 'underwear' on, in the wash, etc. If I ask DD to bring me her underwear she brings me her pants/knickers and a vest. Is that weird? I didn't think it was particularly American
