Three young Americans murdered in North Carolina. See here for more info.

On twitter #ChapelHillShooting
Some interesting comments made about the choice of media words.

Heartbreaking to see the young woman's wedding pictures on twitter sad

PtolemysNeedle Wed 11-Feb-15 09:38:16

Maybe it is getting more coverage in America?

Iwantedthatnamedangit Wed 11-Feb-15 09:44:09

Apparently not. American people on twitter are saying it's been a media blackout. Many people outraged that there has been coverage of Kim Kardashians hair whereas this story is nowhere to be seen.
Crying shame.

I wonder if it's because in the USA the news, like all other programmes, is sponsored ?

Birdsgottafly Wed 11-Feb-15 13:46:36

This can be one issue that Facebook is good for.

I play the games do have people from all over the world on my FB.

They regularly share local news stories and stories which don't get the publicity they should.

I've seen more and more posts about how much the media is controlled and owned etc, by people in the US, so there is awareness.

QueenAngst Wed 11-Feb-15 14:07:47

It's all over my american news feeds. Remember, it's still early morning in the US so it's reasonable to expect the story to pick up momentum throughout today.

AuntieStella Wed 11-Feb-15 14:12:28

The link says the police are expected to release more details today (Wed) and it's only just gone 0900 there.

Perhaps there will be more coverage after that statement?

cleanmachine Wed 11-Feb-15 16:32:21

Is in the news now because of how unreported it was. So tragic and disgusting that it wasn't reported.

The media, Western media in particular, seem not to value the lives of anyone other than whites. The islamophobia rife in the uk and US at the moment will have played a part in this horrible incident.

TRexingInAsda Wed 11-Feb-15 17:06:18

There are so many shootings in America though, and they've said it appears to be a neighbour dispute over parking. Really, really sad, but maybe that's just not massive news over there.

somewheresafe Wed 11-Feb-15 17:14:49

Fox news have stayed is a parking dispute but they're not a reputable news agency at all. They were the agency who branded Birmingham a no go zone when in the throes of their islamophobic ranting.

Minimising and dehumanised these particular victims will be exactly what fox news want to do.

Rip to the victims. Respectable law abiding active citizens. What a loss to North carolina.

Canyouforgiveher Wed 11-Feb-15 17:15:45

It was reported. I heard this on the news first thing this morning and I am in Massachusetts - where shootings in North Carolina would not normally be reported.

prh47bridge Wed 11-Feb-15 18:02:07

Fox news have stayed is a parking dispute but they're not a reputable news agency at all

All news agencies get it wrong sometimes. However, perhaps you would prefer ABC news who are also reporting that the police believe the motive was a neighbourhood dispute over a parking space. CNN carry a similar report as do multiple other news channels.

Apparently he's something to do with Atheists for Equality.

TheFirstOfHerName Wed 11-Feb-15 18:11:09

I read about it in the Guardian website headlines. It's so sad.

cleanmachine Wed 11-Feb-15 18:53:14

'When it comes to insults, your religion started this, not me,” he wrote. “If your religion kept its big mouth shut, so would I. But given that it doesn’t, and given the enormous harm that your religion has done in this world, I’d say that I have not only a right, but a duty, to insult it, as does every rational, thinking person on this planet.”

Taken from the killers fb page and reported by:

It seems obvious that the killing was a hate crime, even if it was a parking issue that led to the actual killings. The victim had reported that the killer had issues with her prior to being killed. I think fox news are despicable for trying to minimise this.

Can you just imagine for one minute if that was a muslim guy who had killed 3 students? It would be breaking news.

The depressing thing is I've read words similar to those posted above (by the killer) here on mumsnet almost word for word.

I'm not muslim but I am sick and tired of the constant vilification of muslims, and religion in general.

babbas Wed 11-Feb-15 21:32:31

Such a sad story. Under reported, and we know why.......

TwitterWooooo Wed 11-Feb-15 22:02:40

Bab as....why? I don't know why?

terrible thing to happen.
but don't understand OP....
do you mean in the UK?
or in the USA?

silversixpence Sun 15-Feb-15 05:08:14

I can't believe Mumsnet has so little to say about this hmm

mimishimmi Sun 15-Feb-15 06:42:22

This is horrible. What gorgeous young people they were ... Sadly the media blackout does not surpriseme, it would portray some Muslims in a positive light. This from one of the victims "He regularly posted on Twitter, and wrote in January: “It's so freaking sad to hear people saying we should ‘kill Jews’ or ‘kill Palestinians’. As if that's going to solve anything" would also get some very powerful and influential people in the mainstream media riled up.

Moniker1 Sun 15-Feb-15 06:55:14

I've read on Google that more than 30 people are shot each day in the states.

Jollyjollysixpence Sun 15-Feb-15 09:05:58

It's dreadful. However, just because those murdered were Muslim, that doesn't mean they were murdered because they were Muslim, though of course that is entirely possible.

What very definitely is the case is that if the murderer had been Muslim, this would certainly be regarded as an attack by an ISIS supporter. There absolutely are double standards in this.
