Well, UK is different because

a) it's a member of the P5, and
b) it's a nuclear power

Pretty high status, really.

The UK gets criticised if we take a back seat and also gets criticised if we take the lead.

We're in the wrong whatever we do!

I think it's about time we took a back seat and while we are at it about time we stopped trying to be a super power. What's wrong with being the comfy aunt everyone likes a cuddle with but does nothing to upset or offend the rest of the family? Can't we take that role for a while?!

I work in the international aid sector and I'd say that Britain holds an extraordinary position of influence, generosity and expertise in responding to humanitarian crises but also in development issues too. We've played an essential role in the current international campaign against fgm for instance. I think it's a reason to be proud of being British. The French are famously slow and stingy when it comes to development issues!
