Listening to radio 4. "Awkward listening" of clips of Gary Glitter and Jimmy Savile but it's all with a Glitter's greatest hits soundtrack. Will this make him money?

Is it complete tracks or excerpts ?

I believe you can use excerpts to illustrate a documentary without infringing copyright (and therefore don't need to pay).

The recent changes in copyright (that no one understands) may have changed that.

It's just little clips so maybe you're right. I hope you're right grin

What a horrid man. I hope they throw away the key.

If it's less than 18(?) seconds then nothing is paid.

Oddly Google isn't giving me the info...must try harder

Was there not some complaint after the Ian Watkins case that he would be receiving royalties due to his music being played on the news etc? So I'm assuming that artists will gain royalties but like another poster said, perhaps it is only if an excerpt of a song is played for x amount of time.
