tinned tomatoes one of the worst foods to eat

Just seen someone post that tinned tomatoes should never be eaten due to the BPA and the acidity of tomatoes meaning it leaches alot and is not safe for children to eat.

I had no idea tinned food contained plastic, aibu to cut right down on them? Often go through 12 cans a fortnight :(

Depends if the person who posted that knows anything about food safety or has any proper evidence to back it up!

What? That sounds like made-up bollocks to me.

Tomatoes are very good for you. As far as I know there is no BPA in steel cans. Why would there be? Yes you shouldn't keep opened tins in the fridge, but most people know that.

Sounds awfully like scaremongering to me.

What is BPA? Is it definitely harmful?

Who has studied this?

Is it peer reviewed research?

I wouldn't stop eating them based on a posting from one person.

Tinned tomatoes form the base of a lot of my meals, I'll take me chances.

A lot of things posted on the Internet are not fact.

The thing is, you could google "Never eat _" with absolutely any food and find some article saying it's unsafe.

People like to be hysterical. As long as you're not eating pure arsenic topped with lead shavings, I'm sure you'll be just fine.

I take it you've had a conversation with this person and asked them for links to back up what they're saying?

So having done the research, only you can say whether you're BU or not.

You can also buy chopped tomatoes in cartons like milk, if it's a particular worry.

I mean, I saw something on facebook which said you should never eat chopped onions, because onions magically absorb bacteria from the air, so much they can even suck bacteria out of a sick person and cure them.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. Because that's totally how diseases work.

Just buy them in cartons.

the BPA is in the white tin lining that you see nowadays, there has been concern about it for some time.

but even the US FDA says it is of very low risk :

"However, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has said that BPA is safe at the very low levels that occur in some foods. This assessment is based on review of hundreds of studies."

If you are that worried most supermarkets sell chopped tomatoes in tetra packs now (for precisely this reason) buy those instead. Job done.

Tin cans and drinks cans are lined with plastic. I would think the cartons are too.

Tesco value tomatoes are not according to this article.

The governments saying BPA is fine are the same ones saying aspartime is fine though ....
