AIBU?

To want to find a pâté that does not contain pork??

I used to love eating pâté but I haven't eaten pork for the past 10 years. I've trawled far and wide but simply cannot find any that don't contain pork as one of the main ingredients. It doesn't matter whether it's pork, duck, chicken flavour, they all have pork fat.

Defeated and dejected I decided to just buy the salmon one from Aldi. Salmon being a poor substitute to the meat ones and I wasn't too happy. Anyhoo, was just about to slather it on some toast when I thought I'd read the label... bloody pork! In a FISH pâté!

Why why why?

I'm going to have to make my own aren't I? Sad

I have made my own smoked mackerel pate - flake smoked mackerel into the blender, add cream cheese, and lemon juice to taste, and blitz until smooth - utterly delicious.

I have made chicken liver pate too - cook the chicken livers with some onions (and a bit of booze if you wish - sherry, brandy or madeira are nice in chicken liver pate), cool, blitz with butter (you'd have to check how much - I think I just guessed and it ended up a bit runny), pass through a sieve and chill.

Pork liver is cheap, plentiful and easy to cook with, which is probably why it is used to much.
Do you live near a Waitrose? A quick search of their website has brought up a few pates without pork in them

I feel your pain. I don't eat pork for various reasons, but bloody love a good chicken liver or smoked mackerel pate. My husband brought me some mushroom pate the other day, and underneath the product name, in tiny letters, it stated that it was made with pork! I agree with posters who say make your own. Takes 2 seconds in my magic bullet and you know exactly what's going in it!

Smoked salmon can be done the same way as the mackarel pate, too. Delish!

Omg thank you people!! I'll be shooting down to Waitrose asap. Smile

I need to get a good blender so that I can make my own as well, those homemade recipes sound delicious.

And no, I'm not fussed whether they're kosher or not, I just don't want the pork.

Waitrose as others have said or some lovely kosher chopped liver. DH brought some home from Harry Morgans and it was one of the best things I've ever tasted.
Or make your own - it takes minutes!

Now you have lots of lovely links... can I ask, why no pork?

Ignore me if you want, but it has intrigued me [can't being nosy emoticon]

There's a few things over the years that have put me off Nomama, such as the fact it is the most similar meat to human flesh, the fact that pigs are very intelligent, that undercooked pork can infect you with worms (can't eat smoked salmon anymore for that same reason :().

I never really enjoyed the taste of it anyway to be honest. I'd much rather eat chicken, lamb or beef.

I thought the pork and worms thing wasn't true these days?

Can I put your mind at rest regarding the worms? Trichinosis used to be rife, that's why they stopped feeding pigs table scraps. But since they banned it even the US has less than 11 cases a year.

But I cannot disagree with the intelligence of pigs or its apparent similarity to human flesh (so I have read).

I can't believe all these other pates have pork in them! I often do make my own but not always and would never have thought fish pates would have any pork in them!!! flabbergasted! reminder to read labels more.....

I make Delia's chicken liver pate and it's fab.

I put it into ramekins and freeze them.

kosher pate is called chopper liver and is made from chicken livers. Takes 10 mins to make, or if you have access to a kosher butcher or live in a Jewish area then go buy some.

food of the gods. Or someone's god, anyway... Smile

Try a kosher shop, OP, no worry about pig there!

Marmite Congratulations but just as a matter of curiosity - which part of a chopped live and salad bagel doesn't going with being pg and why?

Report
Marmiteandjamislush · 16/01/2015 18:28

Liver is very high in vit. A and not advised when pg these days. I could have the salad I guess with tuna rillette instead, but it's not quite the same Sad
