AIBU?

to be annoyed with myself that I'm a victim of my own success and skills (patisserie related)

Im a great patisserie chef through years of practice and training. Everyone has such high expectations of me. But sometimes I just don't have the inclination to make something impressive and wish I could get away like other people and just buy something factory made. But I can't as my reputation is well known and everyone always expects a lot from me. Sigh, I just want to relax tonight but instead I'm having to make my triple pies in cakes with vanillia bean icing, as its been requested for a charity bake :(

Great professionals know their limits, and know when to say no to requests that they can't reasonably fulfil.

People can expect what they like, but they can't force you into doing anything you don't want to do. You need to learn how to say no. It won't make your cake taste any less good.

Do you make a good salted caramel tarte?

Bake boris a cake containing cyanide because he stole your freedom pass

Oh how terrible it must be, oh what a martyr you are. On the other hand, it's going to distract you from the angst about your freedom pass, isn't it?

Clearly you have a problem saying no which has nothing to do with how successful you may or may not be.

Ha thornrose, I thought the same thing!

Just say no. If you continue to do something when you don't want to you will soon begin to resent it and not find it enjoyable anymore.

I just googled 'triple pie cake' and it's almost as disturbing as when I googled Billy.

Sabotage yourself OP, you'll never be asked again...

Get really pissed on Gin before you make the cake? It will help ease the pain and will (hopefully) self sabotage as is the fantastic suggestion from Offler.

Set yourself a limit of charitable causes and stick to it. You may be good at it but that doesn't mean you have to do it all the time.

I sew and people began hinting for handmade for birthdays instead of ordering from me. I made the tips that when I felt like it I would but if not I wouldn't. It was encroaching on my personal life and I needed to say no

Tips?!

Why did you say vanilla bean icing, rather than just vanilla icing? No one says that, apart from some wacky American cooks. You just googled it, didn't you?

Report
TheSpottedZebra · 08/01/2015 16:28

That was meant to say wanky.

I thought this was going to be a jokey post but OP is serious! Weird.

Surely such a top patisserie chef would know that it's vanilla not vanillia... Hmm

Report
diddl · 08/01/2015 16:39

Is that what it sounds like, a pie in a cake?

Or in this case three pies in a cake?

And people request that??

I do contract work and turn down requests for free work. Unless I'm getting paid I don't typically do it.

I have done some stuff as charity work to help out an organization or two, but it's rare.

People only value something as much as they paid for it, which is unfortunate, but it means they don't appreciate free things because they had no investment themselves put into it. Even charities don't always appreciate the work that goes into things and start expecting favors instead of asking for them.

Learn to say no when you don't want to do something.

That looks truly horrible. With vanillia bean icing I suspect it may be even worse, so on those grounds, Y would NBU not to make it.
