AIBU?

To get irritated when people who wear expensive clothes sneer at those that don't?

I just think it's so rude, snobby and nasty. We can't all afford designer and high end clothing, and it doesn't make someone a total scumbag if they choose to/have to wear cheaper clothes.

DH's friend and his wife both wear designer and high end high street clothes, and dress their 3 year old daughter in the same way. Fair enough, that's their choice and they all always look nice. However it irritates me that they look down on others who don't dress as they do (such as me, DH and our kids!). It's little things like asking where an item DD is wearing is from and if we reply it's from Asda/Next/Tesco they pull a bit of a face and say how they would simply never shop there. They also make a big deal about how they would never shop in Primark as they think it's horrible and that they'd hate anyone to see them going in or coming out of there. They were also once totally disgusted when I said DS's trousers were from a charity shop, and one of them made a jokey gagging noise.

I also used to work with a woman a few years ago who referred to lots of high street shops as "common" and "disgusting" and made a huge thing about only shopping at places like Reiss, Selfridges, Karen Millen etc. She always talked about how great her wardrobe was and how she could never bring herself to shop in the shops that the rest of us shopped in.

These kinds of attitudes really bug me. It's just so nasty and unnecessary. By all means buy clothes wherever you want to and can afford to, but don't assume that anyone that doesn't go to the same places it beneath you!

They sound like they have more money than class. YANBU.

YANBU.

Says more about them than you.

Yanbu, but I do think you don't know very nice people. I haven't encountered this.

They are just dicks. Its nothing to do with what they wear.

People either look down on others for superficial reasons or they don't.
They do it about houses, or watches or holidays or accents.

I wear clothes that are pricey and clothes that are cheap.
If I see someone wearing something I love and they tell me it's from a supermarket I tend to be impressed at their savvy.

That said I think primark and next are shit Grin

A lot of dressing well is more down to flair and taste than price. I know people who spend a fortune on clothes and never look anything special, and people who are just clever at mixing and matching and always look great.

It happens more the other way around. Putting people down for saving up to buy an expensive handbag.

I wear a mix of primark and designer. No one has ever made me feel uncomfortable about the primark but the have about the designer.

More money than sense too! A lot of very posh people like a good rummage around in a charity shop.
One of my friends has a hereditary title and buys quite a bit from eBay.

Rude people.

I used to spend a lot of money on expensive clothes.

Then I had children and gave up my job to be a SAHM and my priorities changed.

It's nothing to do with the clothes they wear, it's their personality.

In my village, the wealthiest families wear hand me downs.
Some fools assume designer clothes buy them class. They are quite uneducated in my opinion.
I wouldn't hang out with empty vessels like you have described. :)

I am sure you all look lovely.

I judge people that dress their 3 year olds in designer clothes so can't judge for judging but it seems to lack empathy on their part for not appreciating that everyone doesn't have that clothing budget.

I used to work with a woman who sneered at people for buying work clothes in the supermarket. She shopped at places like Morgan (so nothing very fancy) and used to say she didn't want to run the risk of seeing someone wearing the same clothes. As though Morgan only make 1 of each thing LOL

They're not even particularly well off, they just have average jobs.

I think they'll be in for a shock when they have their second baby in the summer as it will hit them financially I'm sure.

The only thing I would say is that I do dislike seeing children in flimsy clothes - like little girls just in leggings in the middle of winter.

Why nottheop?
That's a bit bizzard.
Should people hide their handbags because others can't afford them, or never go abroad because others can't.
Do you feel like that about every expensive thing or just children in designer clothes?

They sound awful. I usually find if somebody I know has paid a lot for an item of clothing they're quite apologetic about it! Lot's of people dress very nicely on a budget and sometimes people who spend loads don't have a lot of taste.

I have noticed that people with money are often the least bothered about clothes and labels. It's a bit nouveau riche to care so much about it.

LOL youareallbonkers that is the type of thing that my ex colleague used to come out with too.

Or gems such as "Yes I spend a lot on clothes but I've ended up with so many lovely things" as if the rest of us just filled our wardrobes with dog shit.

If they want to waste their money on 'designer' clothes then fair enough. But they are showing their lack of class in sneering at other people who shop in less expensive stores.

I wear a mix of charity shop, primark and mid priced clothes. Because I want to. I could shop in higher class places if I wanted to, but see no point in spending £800 on a pair of boots when I can get a decent pair in Clarks for £80, or even less in Sainsburys.

There are far more enjoyable things to spend your cash on than just clothes imo.

Why would you buy expensive clothes for little kids? They are just going to get shat, pissed and puked on.

I (for weird reasons I won't bore you with) used to buy DD expensive clothes when she was little. I hate stuff with logos so mostly people didn't know and I sold it on eBay. But I did find it odd when people asked and when I answered were a bit Hmm

I think the people you know are just nasty or very insecure.
I know some really well off people who have a completely different attitude and wouldnt think twice about charity shop or hand me down clothes, they also wouldnt think to ask where you got your clothes from, they have manners!

First day back at work yesterday and colleague said I looked very glamorous. I was dressed down to my boots in various charity shop bargains. Even my watch is from a charity shop. Its gold, art deco and I love it Smile

I don't seem to mix in those circles. But now and again I come across elitist people in various situations who act superior and look down on others. They give me a chill and a hollow feeling - and as much as I want to get away from them - I am also intrigued at their grandiosity. They are quite fascinating in a weird way.

People like that need the designer gear to mask the fact that they have nothing else about them.
