i'm itching to know why many mn's slag off the daily mail, what is their choice of paper to read, and why, just curious, considering some of the others on sale.

personally, for its hatred of women
that's top of the list but places 2 to 100 are tinned sardine distance behind

Really?

I don't like the Daily Mail because it's sensationalist and hate filled, particularly towards women.

I don't buy a paper paper, but follow several on twitter, so I can dip into articles that interest me. Off the top of my head, The Grauniad, Independent, Torygraph, Mirror (mostly for Fleet Street Fox - the sentence per paragraph thing does my head in, though), Northern Echo, Hartlepool Mail and various other local and regional papers.

I don't like it because it regularly tells lies, because it has hounded at least one harmless person to suicide, because it seems to take an editorial stance of hating women and because the overall tone is one of distrust towards anything outside "middle England".

I read the Guardian, Telegraph or Independent.

It's a rag.

That said, so many must read it considering the amount of dm links with the standard, accompanying apology.

I dislike the Mail because it is consistently racist, homophobic and deeply, deeply misogynist and appears to exist solely for the purpose of telling bigots exactly what they want to hear regardless of the facts.

In terms of what I like to read - not much really. Independent on Sunday. Huffington Post. New Scientist.

Oh please. If you can't work it out for yourself you're not likely to understand. The DM peddles trash stories that play on people's underlying racism, snobbery, xenophobia, misogyny etc. frequently there will be a story that totally contradicts the position that the paper held the previous day. It is all about stirring up hatred and selling more copies. More women buy it than men and they all should be ashamed of themselves.

It's a collection of sensationalist racist, sexist, poorly written stories for people who can't think for themselves.

What they said.

And my parents seem to be increasingly brain washed by it.

It's car crash journalism. You know you shouldn't look but you do. The most worrying thing about it though is people actually read it and believe the silly stories are 'news'.

Report
drudgetrudy · 05/01/2015 22:42

Because its misogynistic,narrow-minded and hate-fuelled. Also reading some of the articles makes me cringe.

Oh. I buy the Guardian only on Saturdays and think a lot of that is tosh as well but it lasts me all week.

It's designed to incite hatred towards women and towards minority groups.
That is it's reason for being.

I don't read a paper at all nowadays, I don't have time (except the local rag)

BarbarianMum · 05/01/2015 22:44

Oh, yes and xenophobic (can't believe I forgot, thanks Argy).

This must be a wind up thread. Anyone who needs to ask doesn't belong on a forum for intelligent people.

Because it's inflammatory nonsense.

Amongst other things, I would dislike any person who thinks a woman who goes out of the house wearing clothes is trying to 'show off her figure/curves/slimness/etc', so a whole newspaper full of drivel by such people doesn't appeal. See also: racism, benefit bashing, europhobia, homophobia, and just generally being a huge basket of cocks.

it seems intent on being vile about everyone which is obviously awful. plus people like my mother in law read it, quote it and believe it which is utterly insane.

it's so horrible about so many people, ruining people's lives in the process.

Where to begin! Pretty much for the same reasons above (anti-women bollocks the most), but also because it peddles fear and mistrust on just about every level. It misreports research findings to suit its own narrative. It is particularly fear mongering about cancer - EVERYTHING will give you cancer and it flipflops from week to week. It must be a frightening place occupying the Daily Mail mind space. Almost makes me feel sorry for regular readers.

There was meant to be a mass boycott of the DM on MN after they used a headline blaming Britain's benefits culture for the Philpotts burning their children to death. Because nobody who doesn't claim benefits ever commits a crime according to the DM.

PS-used to read the Guardian but have stopped buying newspapers. Whenever I read an article about anything I have in-depth knowledge about I find that they don't let the facts get in the way of their "take" on a subject.
The DM is full of silly articles and opinions masquerading as news.

They lie, very deliberately to get the most sensationalist story, and people believe it, they write stories designed to scare people, and they are very anti women, the sidebar of shame on their website is disgusting. It's a poor reflection on our society that they have the most hits of any news website in the world. It's grim that this opportunist, sensationalist, hate-filled agenda makes some people very rich.
