moving closer to me does not make you reach the till any quicker and the queue isnt big enough to have to be sardines in order to not be a nuisance to other shoppers....

iabu in thinking that people have lost all sense of personal space in queues and this is JUST NOT ON!!!!

im about to start a riot at the customer services checkout in primarni!!!!!

or push you along with their bag. Airports are the worst (I fly most weeks) I swear the number times someone has tried to accelerate me through the scanner by pushing me with their bag :-(

In supermarkets I've been known to quickly turn around and accicentally bump offenders with my basket. Well, if they weren't standing so close they wouldn't have anything to worry about would they?

DrMorbius, your mention of airports reminded me of another when we flew over Xmas - parents who let their young children run around and generally get in the way when you're trying to manoeuvre bags and cases on/off conveyor belts, weighing scales, security tables etc.
At the airport last week I had to say "excuse me" five times (once for every bag or case I had to put on the scales) to a 3/4 yo girl who continually stood between me and the check-in/weigh-in desk. Her parents were right next to us on the next check-in desk but did nothing!

Ooh Norbert I do that too. Swing round quickly with my big shoulder bag. Anyone standing at a normal distance would get away unscathed Grin

Take a big step back, then when they squawk, look astonished and say, 'Oh, goodness me, I had no idea you were so close to me!'

CheeseBuster · 05/01/2015 14:34

I start twirling my basket around with lots of "oh sorry, didn't see you were so very close".

or fluff my long locks in their faces..

Also used to have bum length hair kept in a plait, which was ace if I turned my head fast and someone was standing too close.

I turn round and face them with a benign look on my face. They seem to find it really disconcerting and step back.

Those deliberately hitting other people, do you allow for disabilities, or old age?

I worked in elderly care, but am still exasperated by my Mum when I take her out.

She partly uses a wheelchair.

She does things that don't make sense, is generally standing in the most awkward place, has taken to walking backwards! And doesn't have much of a queue etiquette, anymore.

She is frail though and would be injured by being bashed with a basket (and as disliked as this will be, I'm with her and would knock out anyone who did that).

Would you make allowances for anyone who hit her with a basket who might have disabilities or old age? How do you tell before you 'knock them out'?

Hands up anyone who is mildly amused by the mental image of elderly ladies fighting with baskets while other shoppers look on Grin

I do a pre-assessment of the potential for extenuating circumstances before biffing them one, myself.

Plumping I was in the supermarket once and two old men started having a fisticuffs by the yoghurts after one hit the other with his trolley. It was both Shock and Grin, for me anyway.

Yanbu. I hate this. Think I have a really strong need for personal space. I complained to dh about a couple who were right behind me the other day in a queue. He said I should have kept coughing and sneezing to get them to back off. Not a bad idea. Might try it next time.

I like to antagonize tease people waiting for a ride at parks. I just stand still until there's a giant gap between me and the people ahead. When someone points it out, I just tell them that moving up won't make us get on the ride any quicker. Then I move up a dramatic amount so the people in the back have false hope the line is moving again. It does pass the time. Grin

Can't say I've ever had someone get right on top of me though unless they were trying to push ahead. People here in the US are usually pretty polite in stores because we have concealed carry laws I've noticed.

I hate this too, particularly in supermarket queues when I'm entering my pin into the card reader and some numpty is hovering right over me! BACK OFF...Angry

This happened to me in the petrol station. A woman was stood so close to me when I was paying that I had no alternative but to either step back and step on her feet or twirl around and e literally face to face. I chose the step back option and she tutted. I said sorry I hadn't realised you were so close to me!

I paid cash £20 that I had in my hand so not trying to see PIN number or anything.

I find if you take one of the grocery belt dividers and tell them how you wish there was one for people with no sense of personal space, they tend to step back huffing and tutting Grin
