To be gutted and quite shocked that anyone would do this? Possible theft

Was in PC World today, we were sat at the sale desks with a salesman. We were going to buy something but didn't, another story but was told one price on entering the store then another.

In all the confusion I put ds (6) character wallet on the desk which contained his £20 Christmas money and was going to buy a toy in the sales. It also contained some pretend play money so quite clearly a child's wallet.

We left the store then realised an hour later and went straight back. I was really convinced that somebody would have handed it in, especially being a child's. But nobody has, the lady had a good look around the area where it was left and the salesman said that he left the desk straight away and didn't see anything.

I'm obviously very trusting and naive, gutted to think anyone would steal from a lid for £20.

It wasn't at the tills either it was at what they call the business centre, so not that close to the stock, you probably wouldn't go over to that bit unless you were staff or buying something like a PC which had to be got out from the back, so someone must have been quite snide to take it.

I once left my bag in Primark of all places, ds was only a couple if months old and I had baby brain. It had my camera and all sorts in there. Someone actually handed it in, ds has also left teddys in shops a couple of times and they've kept them.

If someone has taken his wallet I really hope that karma bites them on the ass.

I am actually moving. If I found somebody else's money or property particularly a child's I would hand it in and hope very much that it got back to it's owner. Perhaps that is an unusual thing to do.

The woman I spoke to did day that she would speak to a manager tomorrow about checking the cctv just for the time that we were in there. It's a new store and she wasn't sure what about everything.

On a side note I was really distracted, we went to buy something, checked the price as soon as we entered the store and was told x price. Then spent half an hour waiting to be seen, then spent ages while the guy gave it the hard sell for the care package which we didn't want. Took my purse out, and ds wallet to get to purse, only to find out it was £50 more than was originally told. That deal was no longer available and I guess that noone had realised. It was a computer says no situation. Wanted to get out of there and left the wallet tucked between the computer and phone on the desk.

Trouble is, I think people do expect this kind of thing so are reluctant to hand it in because it's just as likely to be "stolen" by the store staff. i.e. if it's not going to get back to he rightful owner, the finder may as well keep it, rather than let someone else have it.

My Dad found a £20 note in the street and handed it in at the Police Station. The rules are that if it's not claimed within so many weeks, the finder gets to keep it. Dad went back (more out of interest and because he has time on his hands than for the cash) but was told it had been claimed. It's possible, I suppose, but a bit unlikely?

Go to the police. The management are not allowed to tell you anything about what may be on CCTV due to data protection laws. The police will need to obtain the footage and if there's anything on it may well post it on their facebook/Twitter feed. Good luck x

OP, you've been unlucky. Unlucky not to have had the purse found by one of the many honest people in this world. Unlucky to have been a bit distracted.

Dh belongs to a golf club.
A few weeks back he was getting in the car and leant some clubs / drivers against the side of the car whilst loading the boot. Another member interrupted him and they were chatting and dh forgot about the clubs he hasn't put in the boot and drove off.

No one handed anything in. It's a members only club and all the people playing that day belonged to the club (no guests signed in). £700 of clubs. Gone.
It spoilt my already slight faith in human nature a little. They only had to walk twenty yards to the golf shop or bar and hand them in. But no whoever found them kept them.

I hope you find your ds's wallet. I'd like to think that 90% of people would hand in something they found. If you find something in a shop surely you just hand it in to where you found it - the owner will likely return.

If I leave something behind or lose it, I consider it my fault entirely. I've never met anyone who doesn't. You truly are one special person indeed. Wow.

If I leave something on a sales desk in a shop while buying something, yes I think it's a clumsy but human thing to do. I expect that the person who finds it to hand it in, I realise that there are thieves out there, but it isn't finders keepers.

So you are not alone in your viewpoint.
As a former shop manager , who had personal items and stock stolen, I have to say that I disagree.
People make a conscious choice to steal - and that is their decision.
People's small lapses in attention and focus do not excuse the dishonesty of others.

I believe that keeping something you've found it still theft.

Of course I am responsible for looking after my stuff, but I hate the idea of blaming the property owner and not the thief, where would it stop?

I always lock car doors, dp doesn't and I keep nagging him, is it his fault if he gets car jacked or if someone steals something when he's in traffic?

No, the person that knowingly picked up and kept something that wasn't there's is at fault. Not the person who ACCIDENTLY left something behind. This is why theft is a crime and forgetting something is not.
