We were supoose to get paid yesterday, were given a load of excuses by the account eg "I only process on a Monday now payment will be after". Today there is still no payment in my account. I have no gas, no food and need to get the last of my Christmas shopping.

It's not base transfer, we've had issues before where she hasn't paid until the Thursday (fortnightly pay on a monday). I've emailed and text my boss but no reply. Aibu to feel angry and let down, I work so hard, cover when I can etc.

I don't think YABU at all. My old employer used to pay on a different day each bloody month and I'd frequently end up in the red or paying my rent late. I'm sorry you've had this hassle just before Christmas! I know it's not ideal, but could you get a pay day loan type thing just to tide you over?

It's ridiculous to use your December salary to pay for Christmas stuff, what are you going to do for the 5/6 weeks until you get paid again?

Report
msgrinch · 23/12/2014 11:01

I get paid fortnightly and it's the last few Christmas presents so probably £20 out of my wages. I've only just gone back into employment after being off ill for a while. money has been very tight and we're living pay to pay at the moment.

What a strange comment, how people manage their money is none of your business! The fact is, she hasn't been paid.

Also OP has pointed out she get's paid FORTNIGHTLY.

OP - YANBU

I agree with Bonkers. We get paid tomorrow. who would wait until xmas eve to do their shopping? i have scrimp and save most of the year so i cant have it all done before december. I wish i got paid after xmas so that i dont have it all spent before the end of jan.

Nabootique · 23/12/2014 11:02

We would be having beans on toast for Christmas dinner if I hadn't been paid early. We'll scrimp and manage until next pay, but live very much hand to mouth with no spare cash. It's the same for lots of people!

we got paid yesterday (22nd Dec) and don't get another wage until 30th Jan....I hate it ! Try my best to budget but it doesn't usually work out like I planned!

youareallbonkers what a spiteful remark.

Report
msgrinch · 23/12/2014 11:06

clearly it's hard for people to understand that I have 2 more Christmas presents to buy. That's not the issue, that doesn't matter. My rent, bills, childcare payments matter. The fact that I've work 102 hours over two weeks and would like to be paid for it matters, especially as it was due yesterday. Still no reply from the boss.

Wages are a legal enforceable debt of a company and you could wind her company up for non payment.
It's completely unacceptable to expect your employees to wait for payment least of all until after Christmas as one of the most expensive time of the year.
Please look into your rights and look for another job ASAP

Take away the fact it's December.

Would it still be ridiculous to want your wages to pay for food and bills? Are people supposed to have that much cash that their wages are a bonus, not to be relied on? Don't be so daft.

It's not spiteful, I think you need to look up the definition of spiteful. Fair enough I didn't spot the paid fortnightly but the principle remains that if you spend the salary you have got early on Christmas stuff you won't have any money in Jan. If she is expecting to get paid early, what has she done with last fortnight's salary?

I know it is none of my business how people budget (clearly in this case not at all) but if you post on an open forum you are making to the business of anyone who cares to comment.

Of course it's not unreasonable for you to be expected to be paid for the work you've done, your boss is being a total shit. So sorry, hope this gets sorted soon.

I am looking for another job as we speak. It's ok (not acceptable) for the other staff as they only do 4/8 hours a week around college but for me this is our income. I can't have this stress every payday. I took today off thinking I'd have a day to sort bills etc but I'm just sat waiting for news.

YANBU, that's awful. Is it a small company then?

If you have your bosses number call them.

I would also be having a little word with ACAS too. www.acas.org.uk/index.aspx?articleid=1461

I've worked there for 6 weeks, after coming off benefits for sickness. This will be my third pay day. The first was only 2 days pay as that's how payday fell. The second covered what it needed to cover as well as Christmas, this will do the same (rent, bills etc). It's a minimum wage job, new business, so my hours have varied. Hope that explains things.

You don't have to explain yourself to nosy buggers msgrinch. It doesn't matter what you're doing with your money - you earned it, you are owed it, they need to pay it - on time!

I really hope you get some resolution soon. It is very telling that your boss is now incommunicado. They appear to have broken the terms of your contract of employment. - I'm guessing you have written confirmation of the regularity and method of receiving your salary. I would be very angry and let them know.

Can you speak to your bank today to get an authorised overdraft? It would give you a safety net in case it happens again but if you don't need to use it obviously there's no cost.

It's wrong of them to do this when people are absolutely relying on the money. Especially before Christmas. You've worked extra hours and now this. YANBU. You've done the hours you should be paid on time.

Thanks for all the advice. It's really appreciated. Yes I have a contract stating when I should get paid etc. They are going against it. The last time I was paid it was 2 pm on a Tuesday. Time before 5 pm on a Thursday. never the day agreed in my contract, clearly not an automated, bacs and must be when the accountant gets round to it. I've emailed accounts and tried my boss again. My colleagues are all pretty pissed off to.

Less of a hand to mouth problem for us unlike the OP, but I am mightily pissed off none the less, esp as my boss is also not answering anything (email, phone, FB message)

Sorry, OP no solutions but I can share the pissed-off-ness with you.

I don't want to get a pay day loan unless I absolutely have to, will give the bank a call and see what they say. I really love working there but I can't have this every fortnight.
