AIBU?

To think these offices are haunted.

I run a commercial cleaning company which has sadly got too big for me to do the cleaning so I employ people. However there is one customer who only wants 3 hours doing once every weekend so I do it as I find it therapeutic and relaxing.
I work out of hours so I am the only person in the building. As soon as I get in the front door I lock it behind me to stop an opportunistic thief getting in behind me and robbing the place.
On my first shift last month I went into the kitchen and was cleaning the main table. The radio suddenly switches on playing Wham!. I put it down to being an old faulty radio and just unplugged it and never thought twice.
Was there last night and there is one light I never turn on because you have to squeeze past all these boxes to get to the light switch and I am not the slimmest person so I leave it.
Problems started when I heard footsteps in level above me. At the time I figured a different business must rent floor 1 so not to worry.
Next thing the light switches on. I was confused and thought I must have shimmied down by the boxes and weirdly forgotten I had done it. So carried on working and then it switched off while I was in the next room.
At this point I figured there was someone else in the building. I grabbed the metal tube on the hoover and went round all the offices armed with the pole ready to twat a burglar, but nobody there.
Then the footsteps on level 1 again. Then the light turned on and off again.
At this point I decided it was haunted and bricking it I locked up and went.
Phoned the customer today to find out what is on ground 1 and they said it is their storage area and nobody goes up there. Asked if the light was on some timer device and they said no. Asked if one of the workmen came in over the weekend and was pranking me and they said no.
So a bit confused. I do not like believing in ghosts but cannot think of another explanation.

I'm creeped out now. Thanks.

IMO yes it is haunted. Don't go at night!

there have been stories in the past where sometimes it has been a real person, who might be using the place to sleep. or even live or shelter.

Ask the owner outright if it is haunted.
I did a fortnights house sitting through an agency. Both sets of parents lived nearby so I couldn't work out why they weren't looking after the place. After the first night I soooo knew why though. I slept on the settee the whole two weeks! Bloody terrifying and definitely haunted. When the owners got home I asked them outright and they confessed that was why their respective families wouldn't stay. Bastards! Grin

But the light went on and off while I was looking at the room and could see the switch and no-one touched the switch.
Could be some homeless person in the top floor as it is a storage area that no-one goes in. That would explain the footsteps but not the lights or the radio.
With hindsight I should have gone up to level 1 but was too scared.

Seriously?

You'd go with ghost before person?

I want to ask the owner but am scared the owner may just think I am a bit mental. However none of the other customers have spooky offices, just this one.
Odd as it is not an old building. Looks like a 1950-1970s build.

I went with the person explanation first worra, hence me grabbing the hoover pole and going looking for a burglar to twat. However there was no-one there

How is the building owner going to think you're mental, for raising an obvious electrical health and safety issue? Confused

I vote wiring problem too. Not as interesting as weird phenomena but definitely more likely. Sorry, I do enjoy a good woo story but I don't actually believe in the stuff. Ask the owner about wiring issues in the building.

I think you should ask he to get the first level checked out, in case a squatter lives there on the weekend.

Wiring problem? Mice problem - they nibble at wires and can cause electrical weirdness before something blows. Lots of office buildings have mice and you might not actually see evidence of them in the rooms - they are in the roof space/walls as nice and warm and undisturbed, mousey heaven. Sorry if that freaks you out but it's better than ghosts.

Footsteps - are there other offices/flats etc in the same building? Sounds can travel very strangely and be very noticeable at night when there's nothing drowning them out.

I don't believe in ghosts and think there's a natural explanation for these things. It doesn't mean I'm immune from feeling spooked sometimes, but it's important not to let your imagination run away with you.

Let the company know they need to check for rodents and also their security. It's very rare but not unknown for squatters/homeless people to be using places like this.

What others have said. Get on to the owner and say the offices need to be checked for electrical faults, rodents, possible intruders/rough sleepers - it's a legitimate concern, as you work there, and understandable to have been alarmed.

There are no ghosts, so you can discount Wham-loving spirits.

Yanbu at all, how can you prove ghosts do not exist, it's your opinion! Science can only explain so much, it might well be haunted I would not rule it out.

''any adult who believes in ghosts and fairies is an idiot''

Would you also be happy to say that anyone who believes in a deity is an idiot? Jesus? Vishnu? Allah? Buddha?
