In terms of mil sins this is extremely minor but I struggled to contain my jaw drop when mil mentioned this.
Mil babysat the other evening and stayed over. All fine. The next day she mentioned that she had fancied a choccy while babysitting so she had opened a Christmas hamper that Dh's dad had sent us (divorced many years) found a box of chocolates in it, opened the pack and eaten 3. We were saving it for Christmas! Aibu to think this was kind of cheeky?! She had access to fridge, cupboards, pal. P plenty of bread a d etc

It's cheeky whether it was for Christmas or not, I'd say!

Open boxes are fair game for sneaking a choc or two, but everyone knows you don't open a fresh box without permission!

YANBU, very cheeky!

Yes she was, did you tell her you were miffed at her poaching the hamper goods?

Give her the half empty box (take some more out) for her xmas present Grin

I'd call that really rude, but it depends on the person, how close you all are and so on.

Wow, piss takingly rude & cheeky of the highest order Shock

You don't open someone else's chocolate to help yourself & you certainly don't open someone else's xmas hamper

I'm guessing there's animosity with DHs DF ? If I'm reading this correctly, this sounds like quite a spiteful sabotage of the DFs gift

Think the level of cheekiness depends on previous behaviour.

If she is generally nice, supportive, non interfering etc I'd have a minor jaw drop but would be a bit meh about it.

If she has a history of poking her nose in, rummaging through your things, crossing boundaries then I'd be more annoyed.

Do you think she opened because her ex husband had sent it, maybe she is trying to score a point off him, or did nt value it because he had sent it

It would not bother me in the slightest.

Your MIL was extremely out of order. What right has she to open a present - anything - belonging to you? None!

I second BackOnlyBriefly's* suggestion. It might give her a clue as to your feelings on the matter.

YANBU. That could have been something you had bought as a gift for someone else

How rude!
I would tell her the hamper is a gift and ask her to replace it. Tell her she can keep the one she opened.

pictish · 21/12/2014 17:59

I think it's pretty bold, yes. Not something I would do.

CombineBananaFister · 21/12/2014 18:02

I wouldn't be bothered BUT I must think it's sort of cheeky because personally I wouldn't do it myself. Depends on history though - the intention behind the action is sometimes what's important - sabotage or ignorance??

She's your mother in law - not some random stranger. She was babysitting for you. It's Christmas!

It is cheeky, but some of these comments are OTT. Like demanding payment or a replacement.

This was cheeky.

For further proclaiming of her cheekiness, did she know who the hamper was from, did she know it was a gift to you and dh, not one you'd bought for someone else?

Mn is all about the OTT. People love to suggest courses of action that they would never undertake themselves in the real world.

I would tell her the hamper is a gift and ask her to replace it.

Course you would.

hesterton, don't begrudge the chocolates at all, think you missed the point. It was that she opened a gift for us, rifled through it, opened something within the gift and helped herself without asking. In fact s he fessed up when I got another box out to share the next day, quite unashamedly.
Generally she is OK but rather rude (e.g. if asked if s he slept well she will tell you how uncomfy the bed is, complained about how crap the shower is, etc. But nothing majority awful. I am not thinking of going nc or anything over this!

Meh I'd be a bit put out but probably just let is slide as she'd babysat. Bit cheeky that she opened the hamper and then the box of chocolates - if it was me I'd have made do with something else...

Any chance she did it out of spite as it was her exH?

Yeah and won't be causing a scene or anything. Just though t that perhaps it w as perfectly normal behaviour and that I am too straightlaced or something.

Yes it was cheeky but she was babysitting for you which is a kind favour so I would certainly not cause a fuss about it.
