To be annoyed that the teacher spelt Dd name wrong on school report

We have just finished our school year here in NZ so I have just received DD (year 10 - 15 yrs) school report and her economics teacher spelt her first name wrong on the report in the comments section. Someone has circled with pencil around the name.

DD name is a variation of a very popular name and their is only one letter difference, her name is not that unusual and now it is reasonbly popular but when she was born it was very uncommon. The teacher spelt her name the way the very popular name is spelt.

AIBU In thinking Dd teacher who has taught her for the whole year should have spelt her name right on the school report? I'm prepared to be told I'm overreacting.

I just want to point out though, that it's possible the teacher thought that you spelled the name wrong (using the spelling of your own mn nn as evidence)

I'd imagine, after however many tens/hundreds of reports the teacher has written this term alone, that it may have been gasp human error!
Also when parents make up their own spellings of known names it's annoying.

Yep, overreacting. Dh's teacher once got a totally wrong name, eg called him Alex when his name's Jake.
If you insist on a non-standard spelling for your dd she's going to get it mis spelt her whole life

They don't spend that much time with any one teacher at secondary do they? (What do they learn in economics just out of interest? Haven't heard of that subject before) Not like in primary where they mostly have one teacher all day every day?

It sounds like they made a mistake which was picked up (by being circled) and they didn't get round to correcting it.

What is it that's worrying you about it?

Unless this is the last in a long line of things suggesting they're not really engaging with your DD, I wouldn't give it a second thought.

Yup - over-reacting. Focus on what's in the the report about your dd.

Choosing a common name tends to get you an always spelled correctly name for your dc, choosing a less common one, or a less commonly used version of the spelling, and it raises the probability of people making mistakes. It's no big deal.

Ok looks like I'm overacting! I wasn't going to email the teacher or anything as its a waste of time as Dd might not have her next year and tbh I can't be bothered.

Agent there was nothing worrying about it, I was just curious to see if IWBU to think the teacher should have spelt her name right. There were a few things I wasn't entirely happy about with the economics teacher but also the school with regards to economics back in June/July but they have seemed to have sorted it out. In economics they learn about Budgeting, how to do income taxes, accounting, starting a business and selling a product and consumer rights. A lot of general valuable skills with money!

We had school report that had the wrong gender referring to my son as she and her.

I could see how it happens when they have to churn out so many reports but my ten year old felt a bit hurt.

My ds has had the same form tutor since yr 7 (now yr 10) and still spells his name wrong!
We use the Irish form of his name and still get two n's and an e, instead of one n and an o.

If it's word processed, most teachers will use Report Assistant or similar (or just type good/OK/bad reports into word, male/female versions, use 'replace all' for names & tweak details as required.

It does throw up the odd pronoun anomaly, or misspelling of a name.

Ours are proofread by senior staff (used to be form tutors, but it was agreed some years ago that this wasn't a good use of their time). Any errors are circled & returned to the teacher who then corrects & prints out again.

The odd one does slip through the net.

Honestly, it's a total ballache of a job; I'd cut the teacher some slack tbh!

I had the same English teacher for 2 years in secondary. My name is (not) Suzy. There were also two Susies in the class.

For some inexplicable reason she always always wrote all of our names as Suzi.

Every Single Time.

You'd think she'd at least call us all Susie and be right 2/3rds of the time.

Considering you couldn't use the right spelling for 'there' I would say you are overreacting at a teacher making a spelling mistake in a name. Especially since you have stated that they used a common spelling. Easy mistake to make.

When your name gets misspelled or mispronounced aaaaaaaalllllllllll the fricking time you do tend to get peed off, my mum called me a name that was very popular in the late 80's but decided to use the hardest spelling (cheers, mum!) and people constantly call my DD the wrong name. I can see how that could grate on you and it is quite unprofessional to misspell it, I'm presuming her name with the correct spelling was already on the report before she filled it), whilst you aren't being unreasonable to be annoyed, there are worse things in the world.

DS and his girlfriend worked in NZ for a while.They were called Rub and Jin as kiwis don't seem to use vowels the same as Brits.Guess the real names So yes YABU but in an understandable way.

Quinn Me using the wrong spelling of a word on an internet forum is a bit different to the teacher spelling my DD name wrong on a formal document.

Mum that is a very similar situation as DD has!

I've a name where there are different spellings. Like Claire/Clare. Unless someone is tattooing it on me, I don't mind if they use the wrong one. In fact I find it a waste of time if people ask me to spell it for things like hair appointments.

If it helps you feel better, a report at my dc's school had 5 different names on it, fortuitously picked up bythe principal before being sent out.

I am impressed with what is churned out, all those children, all those subjects, what a chore. Thank goodness for comment banks!

DS2 often gets his name spelt incorrectly. His is, incidentally, spelt correctly so I don't know why so many people change it to another less common spelling. The only time I've mentioned in 14 years was when he started reception and it was wrong on all the labels etc.
