To be angry with husband

Just been for a lovely winter walk, but it was far from it. Husband had wondered off with the pram with 1 year old in it. I was walking with 2.8 year old though muddy puddles when he stumbled and ended up sat in the puddle. Husband scowled at me while turning round and heading back to the car park.

2 year old then was inconsolable because he wanted to carry on the walk but we couldn't as husband had left. I got back to the car (having to carry a tantrumming toddler) and told husband I wasn't impressed and he said it was my fault as I caused the tantrum by letting him fall over. I've said it doesn't matter what caused it, we're supposed to be a team and you don't just leave someone on their own, you at least wait a bit further on to make sure everything is ok.

2 year old was dressed in splash suit, coat and 2 layers of clothes so wasn't even damp or cold when we undresssed him.

Who is in the wrong here? Is it all my fault for not holding little boys hand tightly enough in the puddle?

He's upset because a toddler fell in a puddle? Surely that's part of the deal with little ones. He sounds ridiculous.

Your dh sounds quite...err...disproportionate?
Why did he storm off like that?

I can only assume that he thought toddler would carry on kicking off, which he wouldn't have done.

He's done a few little things like this, where I'm left on my own to deal with the toddler and his stock answer is.. what can't you cope with one child. Grrrrr, he's really got me angry. Should have carried on with the walk and left him to shiver at the car!

He acted like an arse I'm afraid.

Did he assume that as the toddler had fallen in a puddle he'd be wet and cold so you needed to get back to the car and home ASAP?

That's the only reason for heading back when he did that I can think of.

He did but unless this is usual, you both sound really stressed. Time to see if you can get a babysitter and have some downtime?

If I was asking how many children you had, I would expect you to include your husband. I'd be upset if mine did this, toddlers do fall over, that's what they do!

Thank you. It's calmed me down confirming he was being an arse.

Think he's a bit more precious about things like this because he doesn't spend as much time with him. If I'd have been on my own we'd have laughed about going swimming in puddles and then done an admittedly shorter walk.

We're actually off out this afternoon, not a great start to our festive trip out. But time to just let it go and try to enjoy the rest of the day I guess.

Surely the normal thing to do is go back to the toddler and your partner, see if all is ok and if toddler needed to go back to the car - having to drag the toddler back escalated everything.
