AIBU?

To chuckle when I met a family with matching personalised number plates!

I certainly raised an eyebrow, and stifled an inner chuckle when I met this family...

OK so Mum, Dad, 20-something Son and Daughter have a car each, so 4 cars with 4 personalised number plates.

Say Mum is called Emma Sophie Lanchester, her number plate is:
FAM4 ESL

Say Dad is called Humphrey Charles Lanchester, his number plate is:
FAM4 HCL

Obviously these are not the real names and number plates but you get the idea! They all start with the same four letters, and end with the drivers initials.

Of course the parents have matching Range Rovers, and the two kids have an Audi each!

At first I was Hmm, but then I was Grin at the things some people will waste their money on! AIBU?

Surely it would funnier if they'd paid for personalised plates that didn't have their initials on?

Yes it's your money to spend. But I'd also have a chuckle at matching Christmas jumpers to be fair to the OP. It's just a bit funny isn't it?

I love personalised number-plates. It is short-hand for knowing someone is a dick.

I managed to get the kids into matching jumpers (they are 3 & 4 so don't get a say in this), but OH just won't play ball. The bastard! Xmas Wink

Lol. Dh and I used to chuckle at a pair of private plates for sale locally - T4 HEN and T4 EGG. Utterly pointless really unless a chicken farmer and partner bought them. We see the HEN driving around now but never the EGG.

I don't like private plates myself but each to their own. Surprised that the dc in the op were ok with the family plates really. Not cool.

I know a family with personalised plates. Mum, dad and 4 adult children. The children's plates were all purchased years before any of them could even learn to drive and the dad had them on company vehicles.

I don't have a personalised plate but I don't get why it's funny?

I do know a couple who have matching plates but I never thought anything of it, why would I?

Why would anyone snigger? I just don't get it Confused

Personalised number plates just seem so vain. Have you noticed that lots of BMW X5 drivers have "X5" somewhere in their reg?
Or drivers of big 4x4s with the plate "BI6 T0M", do you really need to spell it out on your number Plate?!
The funnies one I've seen was on a large family MPV - it read as "O Roger, why" Wink

The funniest number plate I've seen was PEN1S - how apt I thought!

And the most egotistical was A1MUM

Each to their own, but I really struggle to imagine a time in my life when I've literally got nothing better to spend my money on. The ones which point out the make of car seem the most pointless. I can already see you have a bmw.

A woman who lives near me, who is a little up her own arse said she bought a personalised number plate with the letters HMJ. because her kids are called Hannah, Joseph and Max. It's up to her, but I'd waste my money on other things. She does make a point of telling people though. I wonder if she just happened to buy a car with those letters in the registration.

I've seen quite a few X5 plates on cars like range rovers. I'm guessing that the person used to have an X5 but for some inexplicable reason moved the plate to the new car when they replaced the X5 with a range rover Confused.

It's a bit naff isn't it- the matchy matchy part. Very "new money" type of tackiness.

I can remember my Dad and his mates discussing personalised plates when they were younger - to working class blokes in the 70s and 80s a personalised plate was a sign that you had arrived.

If they are older people then they may not see them as naff like some people do.

My friend has one just to hide the age of her car.

Oh so it's a snobby thing?

Yes, my friends who have the matching plates are what you would call "new money" He grew up with his 9 siblings in a 3 bed council house and has done brilliantly well, setting up a multi million pound business.

I really doubt he could give a stuff about jealous snobs sniggering at him Grin

I've seen a few times near us a very large car with B00BIES for a number plate. We can't work out if he's a plastic surgeon or a bit of a tit. Or maybe his name really is Mr Boobie.

A family on the (posh) estate where my parents live have the surname "Hunt", and all have numberplates around this. The man's name is (not kidding) Colin and his car is C1 HNT. You couldn't make it up.
