AIBU?

AIBU to think this present was a not so subtle hint?

Ok I know IWBU to open it so early but that's not the point

I got a lovely big toiletry bag containing the following:

Beautiful, clearly thoughtfully chosen scarf
1 pack of bed socks
A purse
Hairbrush
Shampoo
Conditioner
Fancy hand soap
Deodorant
Perfume
Body spray
After Eights
Toothpaste
Daz washing tablets
Shower gel
Mini box of chocolates

She got me loads which I completely appreciate but I am majorly paranoid that this is a strong hint about personal hygiene. To put it into context I think I am fairly clean - I shower every second day (daily if doing anything active/mucky or on tom), I don't take HUGE pride in my appearance but get my nails done regularly, am usually in 'smart' clothes, someone does my ironing because I'm crap at it and don't want to look all wrinkly and I usually have make-up etc on.

I asked someone else I'm really close to do I smell/have poor personal hygiene and they said definitely not and I know she wouldn't lie (she was the one who pointed out about years ago how untidy my clothes were hence me paying someone else to do it) but I really can't imagine why else anyone would give the above.

AIBU to think no-one would ever give the above with no ulterior motive and that this is a big fat hint that really I'm not as clean as I think I am?

It's the daz washing tablets that are really out of place in that list. All the other things I can just about imagine putting together if I thought I would do a ready to go toiletry bag as a gift. But washing powder? Is the giver generally a bit random?

Yes, the toiletries seem reasonable, especially coming with the bag, maybe she bought that and thought she'd fill it with nice things, although I wouldn't give someone a deoderant unless it was part of a gift set.

The daz tablets is a very odd thing to give as a gift.

was it your mil?

daz washing tablets ??? heck, that's random, who gave this present to you ? i'm sure nothing is meant by it on a personal level, after all we all buy toiletries etc, so it's saved you some money, but i don't get the daz at all.
as your close friend said everything is fine [after all she was a bit brutal over the ironing]! i would listen to her and try to but the negative ideas aside.

Maybe they thought it would be a practical/thoughtful gift that you would appreciate since you use those or similar products regularly? Sounds like they went to a lot of effort so I'm sure they didn't mean to offend you or make you feel paranoid. Or maybe they asked to have a pack made up to a certain value and the shop assistant picked it out, our local shop provides that service.

Forgot to say she's one of my closest friends.

She always gives lots of little presents rather than one big one. For my birthday she gave me flowers, 3 tops, chocolate and costume jewellery so random but sensible usually.

I don't think she would find it easy to tell me that sort of thing. A long time ago, we ran about with another girl who had horrendous BO and it was me that had 'the talk' with her as she didn't feel she could approach such a sensitive issue (she's self-aware enough to know she would be like a sledgehammer in a green house).

Hmmm. I would be completely paranoid if a friend gave me this! If it was a good friend I'd probably just come right out and say "deodorant? Tooth paste? Washing tablets? Are you trying to tell me something??!!"

Maybe it is a hint to you to shower every day, and not every second day? What was the deodorant, Mitchum's?

Grin That's funny.

Maybe she was just trying to get you practical things along the lines of "bath stuff".

Is she normally passive aggressive? If not, I'd just take as a thoughtful gift.

The last two Christmases, my PiL, who I get on with fairly well I thought, have given me industrial quantities of wrinkle cream. I am 36. I was a bit bemused the first year, but they gave the same set to their Daughter, so I let it go, but I was very confused to get a repeat gift. I am rather worried about it already ...

The Daz is very odd. The deodorant is a bit odd as is the toothpaste.

I wonder if she put some of her own shopping in a carrier bag with your presents and then tipped the whole bag into the toiletry bag having fogotten her few bits of shopping were in there too?

Why would you not shower daily?

I thought generally people shower daily but obviously my mistake Derek...

WWW3 - you may not shower daily if you don't have a very physical job or lifestyle, or don't have to plaster on sunscreen daily, or don't roll around in shit :) many people have very dry skin which is made worse by daily showers / baths and intersperse showering with flannel washes.

It looks like a travel kit of toiletries. Do you have a trip or holiday planned? Could be she was thinking of a ready to go kit you could take away with you?

We do Christmas shoeboxes for local workers - we live in the Middle East - and it has almost all those in! Even the laundry soap.

Does she like to do unusual things for gifts? Sometimes, I have 'great' ideas (not really, it just seems so at the time) for presents, then when they've been given, I've realised what a complete head case I am that my ideas are a bit off.
But the recipient still loves me and knows I'm not sending hidden messages. I think your friend belongs in my kind of 'eccentric' camp. Xmas Smile She's probably filled the bag, had a 'space' and panicked about it so put the Daz in! cos that's the kind of thing I'd do Xmas Blush

Maybe she intended it to be a holiday bag. The Daz to wash your pants and bras?

Report
MackerelOfFact · 12/12/2014 05:28

Agree that it looks like a travel kit - everything you'd need for a holiday. Spare purse for foreign currency, Daz for handwashing clothes, etc etc.

The After Eights are a bit random in that lot but I guess it could be for snacking on once you've returned from dinner or something.

Sounds a bit like she had loads of Tesco clubcard vouchers she wanted to use up though. Confused

Thank you all Flowers

I think the travel bag thing is probably bang on the money as we'll be going away on a spa weekend early January. Small case of the head staggers so I forgot about that to you all pointed it out Smile

I once gave a similar gift, minus the daz, to someone who travelled a lot, I really hope now that she didn't take it as a hint to improve her personal hygiene Blush

Do you smoke or have anything else that might make u a bit whiffy? Cooking a lot of strong smelly foods can make clothes smell too.

Was it a travel/mini pack of Daz? Maybe she keep such things in her washbag ready to travel so it seems normal to her? I'm clutching at straws aren't I?

Maybe they were on special offer when she shopped for the rest so she picked them up for herself then forgot to take them out?

Have you recently, or are about to have a baby? Daz is great for getting shit stains out of baby vests

I'd be over the moon if somebody bought me some Daz because I do about loads of washing a week and it would save me a bomb! Maybe she just thought it was a nice gesture?
