I think the harvests of apricots have failed, making them three times the price. I just don't think I can justify getting any this year. They are in so much of my Xmas food from stuffing to pudding. Only really buy them at Christmas so only just found out sad

How expensive can apricots be?

Tesco seem to be selling them at very average prices, but I'll admit, my standards are low when it comes to food fgrin

would tinned apricots not work in any of your recipes? They're about 70p for a 400g tin.

or just get one pack, they're about £2.50 and do one nice pud?

Apricots are yummy! [helpful]

We buy the dried ones from Lidl and I can't say I've noticed a change in price but it may just be that I'm unobservant.

Aldi still fairly cheap, but yes you're right there's been a bad harvest in Turkey affecting the price. I've been buying them whenever I see them!

Or what about replacing the apricots with slightly cheaper dried fruit, e.g. cranberries in stuffing, chopped up dates in the pudding.

Peaches, nectarines or plums would work. Or why not use seasonal fruit when it is in season in the UK, then it will be cheap

Do you mean fresh or dried? Other cheaper soft fruit work really well, I even drained a tin of apricots really well and used them.

Apricots have to be my least favourite fruit. There's something about the texture that I can't stand. Can you not see the word Apricot and just substitute it for Date?

Bettercallsaul1 Thu 04-Dec-14 19:34:13

No no,Hassled - they are yummy! Apricot tarts, apricot jam, dried apricots ... And so good for you!

Buy them anyway, cut back on something else or buy less if you have to.

Well lots of lidl stuff is fine, but I have a reaction to the apricots with preservatives, so only buy the dark brown ones. These have shot up! Used to buy a 2.5 kg bag but just can't justify the cost this year!

£14 here + postage. What do you usually spend?

SantasBassoon Fri 05-Dec-14 09:25:22

Yes, how much are they usually? Someone will find them at a reasonable price if they know what they're aiming for.
